MMC error – can't initialize the snap-in

I’ve had a Vista Home Premium PC for about 1 1/2 years. No problems at all. I just tried to use “event viewer” (it’s been 5-6 months since I’ve used it) and got the message “can’t initialize the snap-in” when it started. It points to b05566ad-fegc-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510. Windows is current as far as updates.

this is a little out of my expertise and haven’t been able to find much info that helps me using google.

More information would be helpful.
How are you accessing the Windows “Event Viewer”. There is more than one way to do so.
When and how was the last time it was accessed.
Have you checked to esure that it’s service is running and has not been inadvertently disabled at one time?
Has something changed in your computer to deny you administrative rights/permissions to access the event viewer?
What is “b05566ad-fegc-4363-be05-7a4cbb7cb510”?

In the Windows “run” box, type the folowing one at a time:
EVENTVWR or EVENTVWR.MSC: opens Event Viewer
SERVICES.MSC: opens Service manager. You want to ensure that the Event Viewers services are running.
Both “WINDOWS EVENT LOG” and “WINDOWS EVENT COLLECTOR” services are associated with the event viewer.

I’ve started Event Viewer thru Programs, Administrative tools, event viewer and also by entering the program name using “RUN”. And yes, I also used “run as administrator”. As I said, I believe I last used it 5-6 months ago although I’m not exactly sure of the time frame. I accessed it then thru Admin tools.

As far as I can tell the services it requires are running, ie, “windows event collector” and “windows event log”. No changes in rights or permissions. Myself and my wife are the only users. The administrator and our account both have “read and execute” privileges.

I’ve attached the error window. The clsid is located in the registry at HKLMsoftwaremicrosoftmmcsnapsFX My knowledge of the registry and clsid’s ends right about there. One part of the original error message states” the snap-in might not have been installed correctly” but considering that it used to work and Vista has not been reinstalled, not sure what that means.

I’ve been doing some searching on this and have come up with the following:
possible causes for the problem include Peachtree accounting software, MS Office 2007 and Nero 7.
Possible solution is to rename the file: “eventvwr.exe.config”, located in the “C:WindowsSystem32 directory” to “mmc.exe.config.BAK “.

MMC fails to load event viewer in RTM
After typing this I found a mmc.exe.config file that was forcing the version of .net. Renaming the file fixed my problem.

You rock! I spent a long time trying to figure this one out. An application (Peachtree accounting) installed the .net 1.1 framework and hosed many of my MMC snap in’s including event viewer, task scheduler and IIS 7 admin.

I looked in my system32 folder and sure enough there was an mmc.exe.config file that had the supported runtime section set to “v1.1.4322”. I couldn’t seem to edit the file to comment out that section, vista wouldn’t let me save it, but it did let me rename it to mmc.exe.config.BAK and sure enough everything started working again. I’m guessing these problems with mmc and snap in’s in Vista are all related to apps that install the .net 1.1 framework and windows vista’s inability to protect that mmc.exe.config file.

Try the above and see if it has any effect.

I have no “eventvwr.exe.config” file in the System 32 directory. Don’t have a “mmc.exe.config” file either. Also don’t have any Peachtree software or Office 2007 (have 2003) or Nero 7. I had previously ran across that post when I was researching it.

Have you tried running “SFC /SCANNOW” (without the quottion marks and with a space between the C & /)?

Do you know what software you’ve installed or updated since this last worked?

I’ve attached a picture of the registry key. Probably too many updates/installs since it last worked. Just don’t remember. I did run a “sfc /scannow” but nothing changed for event viewer.

I read thru that thread but most of it is way over my head.

why do you need to access the event viewer? what seems to be the problem?

No problem. I have always used event viewer just to keep an eye on what’s happening with my PC’s. I kinda got out of the habit this year because of other stuff that’s kept me busy.
