    I just got a new computer with XP Home installed. I enabled Quick Launch, but the Show Desktop icon isn’t there – only Internet Explorer is. Can anyone tell me how to put Show Desktop there? I thought it would automatically show up when I enabled quicklaunch.

      Open My Computer and go to C:Documents and Settings Application DataMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch
      If you can’t see such folders, from Tools menu click Folder Options, View tab. check “Show hidden files and Folders” and uncheck “Hide file extensions…”
      Check is “Show Desktop” file in this folder. If not, right-click anywhere in this folder, from drop-down menu choose New | Text Document and open it. Copy and paste next:

      [Shell]
      Command=2
      IconFile=explorer.exe,3
      [Taskbar]
      Command=ToggleDesktop

      Then choose Save As from File menu and type the name:

      Show Desktop.scf

      Click Save and Yes when it asks you are you sure to change the extension.
      I hope it will help you.
      Happy holidays!

        Your instructions couldn’t have been any easier. I had to create the text file. It took 3 minutes. Thanks a bunch and happy holidays to you too. smile

        Bless you!!! I had the same problem on my Sony laptop, and spent over an hour on the phone while their top notch techies tried to figure out a solution. Their ultimate decision was to have me do a complete system reinstall, overwriting all my programs and data. What a great response! Like I really want to start from scratch again. I decided I would rather live without the “show desktop” icon. Anyway, thanks again for solving my problem, and have a wonderful holiday.

        My thanks as well. I inadvertantly moved the Show Desktop icon out of Quick Launch onto the Desktop. When I tried to drag it back in, it would only place a shortcut in Quick Launch, not the actual command file. I could find no information on where the Quick Launch stuff was actually located until I checked the lounge. It was then simple to move the file back where it belonged. As usual, the lounge is a great place to go for information!
