I’ve got some sort of problem with Win10 on my desktop system, possibly related to USB ports.

Lately, when I plug portable devices into my USB ports, they are not recognized in Explorer but they can be seen in  Devices and Printers and Computer Management windows.

    Below is a  screenshot example.

When I take the same device and plug it into the USB port of my laptop, also Win10, the device is recognized just fine.

I have also checked with all of my hard drive utilities and they cannot see USB plugged in devices either (rotating disk or SSD).

I removed the media via the “Safely remove hardware and eject media” in the tray and reconnected it multiple times but that did not help.

I have rebooted but that did not help.  I also tried a different USB cable.

I also tried different ports with the same result of not showing the device.

Unsure why some parts of the system can see the device but the main access point via Explorer, cannot.  Any ideas on things to check/do?

Figured this out. I had to assign a drive letter to the device in Drive Management.

      But WHY?

I assigned it the letter “I” in this case.

But why doesn’t Explorer just assign it an unused letter when it is mounted?

And why did it work on my laptop, where this device has NEVER been plugged in, and where I did not assign a drive letter to it?

I have been using this device for years on the desktop system (last used prior to today was 12/25/2022). I don’t remember if it had a drive letter assigned but I assume it must have because the device was recognized and worked. So what changed in between then and now to cause it to lose the drive letter than Explorer seems to need so badly?
