I need to change all the numbers in a book index and it has to be done manually. Each number has to have 14 subtracted from it. To make this easier, I thought I coud set up an Excel work sheet with the numbers 15 through 256 in column A and the corresponding numbers (1 through 242) in column B. Can someone instruct me as to automatically fill column A with numbers 15 through 256 and insert a formula in column B that would subtract 14 from each cell in column A? Thanks.

Try entering 14 in blank cell, copy it and then select your index numbers, goto Edit, PasteSpecial and select Subtract.

Very useful for me too. Ok then, let me crank this one up a little further then!!! How would I subtract 15% from a range using this method.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated

          put 0.85 in a cell
          copy the cell
          paste special – multiply

The answer was a bit obvious come to think of it blush .

I was putting in 15% and then subtracting and getting horrific results.

You were just subtracting 0.15 (=15%) from each number, which is not the same thing as subtracting 15% “of the current value” which is implied in your question.
