Recently updated one of our machines, a Dell Precision 7740, to Mint Mate 22.  Matched BIOS security settings to those in our Dell Optiplex 5060, and the same as in previous Mate versions.  But the new installation requires a password on warm boot- i.e. awakening from the suspend mode- a new and unneeded precaution in this secure residential environment.

Turns out that requirement is by the OS and not the BIOS- a Mint Forum user in Portugal had the answer.  On this screenshot from main menu> screensaver, note the blue arrow near the bottom- this box is checked by default, triggering the p/w requirement.  Unchecking the box as in the s/shot removes it.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ve just installed Mint 22 Cinnamon on an old (ca 2009) HP Pavilion laptop. I haven’t gone through all the preferences/settings yet, but compared to Mint 20.3 Cinnamon I have noticed some changes in defaults and what I call menu locations. I don’t see the point in most of these changes, but it’s an affliction that affects Windows and macOS as well – change for change sake (if that’s any consolation).

On the positive side, though, this HP laptop was basically dead in the water back in 2015 when running Windows Vista. After installing Ubuntu and later Mint, it continues to hum along. I did swap out the HDD for an SSD a couple years ago and it’s a very usable machine now.

Our old HP laptop, OTOH, is circling the drain.  Were I armed, and if it were a horse, I’d take it out behind the barn and shoot it out of sympathy.
