Migrating to a new HDD (Win XP Home)

Hi all, had my “D” drive (30Gig 2years old) lock up the system the other day, thanks IBM. It contained mostly my back up data. As my “C” drive (40Gig) is also an IBM and 9 months old, I wish to migrate my existing setup to the new 80 Gig Seagate Drive.

I believe XP has a migration applet for just such a scenario. I also have partition magic 7 and NSW2002 with Ghost on it.

As this is a fairly complicated box, server with RAID, SCSI, broadband connection, firewall, etc it will take many hours of work to migrate completely. So I am after a bullet proof method.

Do I,
A) install everything manually, copy the necessary files and folders across and setup the long way.
use ghost
C) use Partition Magic
D) use the XP migration tools
E) any other solution you would mention.
F) leave well enough alone!

My first instinct is to ask why you don’t leave your C: drive alone? Just because you had an IBM drive fail doesn’t mean that all IBM drives need to be disposed of. Since I’m a big fan of, and many years successful user of PowerQuest’s Drive Image, I’d recommend it highly if you want to “move” your C: drive to that 80 gig. On the other hand, you could replace that D: drive with the bigger 80 gig drive and still leave your boot drive alone.

I use Drive Image to alternately back up my disks to DIFFERENT destination drives once a week across my small network. Saved my bacon on many occasions!

Hi Al, I am at the moment leaving the old one alone and have backed up things as necessary.

Two reasons why I am wishing to migrate is the 80 gig is newer and the computer shops around these parts all say that they are having a lot of IBM failures. some won’t even sell them for that reason. May just be ###### but could be truth in it as well. I too had always used IBM drives for the same reason as you and was always willing to pay a premium for the “better” hard drive.

I have used ghost succesfully to clone a hard disk. For XP you need the latest version. It can happily clone to a larger disk asking you on the way to set the partition sizes.
