There’s a reason why you should never install an “optional, non-security, C/D Week” patch for any Windows 10 version. Last month’s is worse than most.

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody PlusFebruary 8, 2020 at 7:44 am #2136937Quoted from Woody:
The longer I work on warning people about bad Windows patches (16 years on AskWoody, before that in my books), the more I wonder what compels people to install the latest, untested patches.
Human nature, I guess. The eternal hope that something better waits just around the corner…
IMHO, it’s human impatience, & trusting “the powers that be” (Micro$oft). “MS knows better; they invented Windows, after all. Why should I let a well-known author on Windows & Office tell me when I should update my PC?! MS has updates ready now… why shouldn’t I install them now?“
Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

GuestFebruary 8, 2020 at 8:36 am #2136948I have a few theories as to why people almost impulsively try to install those updates:
1. They’ve been conditioned to do so. Security experts around the globe keep telling people to install updates, and recent security breaches have been a motivator to patch now quickly. Of course I’m willing to bet that most people who check for updates on Windows don’t really know the difference between non-optional updates and optional updates; they think that all updates in some way shape or form improves their security (or their system performance, if they buy into that nonsense). So people who see an update think they have to install it right away. This philosophy might work better on other operating systems, but Windows is an exception.
2. Other software they use update quickly, rapidly, and painlessly. Chrome and Firefox have the smoothest update processes I’ve seen of any software. Many other popular programs like Spotify, Discord, et al. also update quite painlessly. These programs tend to download and install updates without user confirmation, but the update process is so fast that people generally don’t notice it, and these updates rarely make any drastically noticeable changes to the software. Perhaps people have gotten the idea that software updates should be as painless and seamless as this. Microsoft even seems to be encouraging this, and it looks like this is the direction they had wanted Windows to go in for a long time. Sadly, Windows is an old elephant, and in no way can updates be as smooth as silk like all the others.
3. They’re excited to try new things or get the latest improvements. That’s what software developers have always sold their updates as and it’s what appeals to the inner, “tribal” nature of users. New, shiny, and better always seems appealing. People are excited by new things that are unlike the mundaneness of everyday life. Buy someone a new phone or a new laptop and unveil it to them and you’ll see how excited they get. (Of course, as wisdom will tell you: that feeling doesn’t last, so don’t rely on it) It’s just a shame that these optional updates tend not to introduce any shiny.

ManagerFebruary 11, 2020 at 9:25 am #2138442The optional non-security updates are normally included in the next month’s Security updates issued on the next Patch Tuesday.
But there is hope that the bugs have been fixed in the Patch Tuesday releases. That is the purpose of the DEFCON system. To wait until we verify the bugs HAVE been fixed before we install the patches.
