It’s the same pattern we saw with the last major update, to version 1511. InfoWorld Woody on Windows

Woody: There’s an article on WinBeta suggesting that a later build may yet be coming…

      Dear Woody,

As a non Win Beta person I am a little confused.

We are still at MS Defcon 2.

Will the Anniversary Update being discussed arrive on or before July 29 for everyone using Win 10?

If so, and we are at Defcon 2, when do we install the July updates for Windows 10?

Mine have been hidden until we got your go ahead to install them.

      Thanks!

We don’t know what’s going to happen on July 29. I’m guessing that MS will pull its GWX patches, and possibly its “Win10 enabling” patches.

For now, there’s no reason for anybody running Win7 or 8.1 to install any of the outstanding updates. (In fact, there are good reasons to avoid the Excel updates.)

For those using Win10 already, the Anniversary Update will arrive on or around Aug 2.

Thus, I’m unlikely to change the MS-DEFCON level until July 29.

Re: the GWX patches … as you noted, no one knows what Microsnot will do with them when July 29 comes around. They may simply cancel them, delete them or change them immediately or at the next Black Tuesday.

Something, however, to consider is that many of us have the GWX patches hidden. As a few posters here have noted, hidden patches can become phantoms in Purgatory if the underlying update gets changed or canceled. May I suggest that those of us who have them hidden, UNHIDE them. That way, the status of the affected KBs can be properly updated.

      Thoughts?

Woody: Can’t find it right now but I’m sure I read that if you update to Windows 10 less than 30 days before the August 2 update is released, it won’t be offered right away. You will get your full 30 days to decided If you want to roll back; if not, this update will then be offered.

    • #38829

That’s correct. The Win10 Anniversary Update will not be installed automatically until your 31-day rollback period expires.

    • #38830

Might be a good approach, but we’ll know a lot more on the 30th.

    • #38831

Thanks for relaying this recommendation. It is certainly the best approach.
