in my case, the file KB4462923 still shows up in the “Important” update window. however, unlike the past, when all files were automatically “checked” (the box before the file name) for download, this time, the box in front of KB4462923 was left empty (unchecked).  if my memory serves me well, last week, that box was “checked” for download.  seems like MSFT is setting this file “optional” but customers have a choice to download this “Important” file.  just a mess.

Ditto for me.  I still have the Rollup patch KB4462923 has an unchecked Important update.  Also, the .Net Framework update KB4459922 is an Optional Unchecked update.  Hide them both and see if they reappear?  I normally hide all Optional updates regardless.

KB3177467-V2 was offered only after hiding all important updates. I installed KB3177467-V2 it and unhided all updates. KB4462923 was still not showing.

KB4462923 finally showed as unchecked only after hiding all important AND optional updates.

Windows Update is configured not to install “Recommended” updates.

Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1 OEM French.

I unhided all the updates I previously hided and KB4462923 is available but unchecked so hiding updates may not be necessary.

Based on the info I’m seeing, it appears they hide the October rollup thru WU due to the issue with the new or should I say updated SSU.  Both are still showing up in WSUS as I’m guessing that they assume Admins are actually reading notes for the patches that say the SSU is required to be installed first. Like wise on my testing systems 7 32/64 bit and 2008 R2 64bit no issues with any of the patches.

I truly feel for the Win7 faithful. Microsoft can deny it all they want, but they are So Desperate for people to migrate to Windows 10 whatever that they’ll do Anything to muck up Win7 & convince those users to move to the “more stable” Win10. As I’m on Win8.1, I have no reason to gloat… because come January 2020 if not sooner… I’M NEXT!

Bought a refurbished Windows 10 64-bit, currently updated to 22H2. Have broke the AC adapter cord going to the 8.1 machine, but before that, coaxed it into charging. Need to buy new adapter if wish to continue using it.

After reading what seems like 80% + of all the problems discussed on this site that are related to Win 10, it is me and probably many other Win 7 users who feel for the Win 10 sufferers.  I used Win XP up until 2013 without getting any MS Updates and never had any problems.

Now I use Win 7 and have been doing Security Only updates plus MS Office and occasional .Net updates.  Things are fine, no mucking up going on here that I can see.  When the time comes that I feel insecure using Win 7 on the web, I’ll switch to Linux which I’m already getting familiar with.

Being 20 something in the 70's was far more fun than being 70 something in the insane 20's

@WildBill, do you actually think MS is interested in a 5% +/- 1% market-share?
I don’t, I think it’s the Win7 lion share they are after. By hook or by crook there will be a lot of Win7 die-hard fans not going to budge.

FWIW, been checking this for last 3 days, my W7HomePremx64  _DOES_ still offer the Oct Rollup, but it is unchecked.  It’s now Monday 13:50 edt and it’s still offering it.  So…

I have had the serving-stack-updates installed since July’16 and Sept’16 when they were originally released.

Microsoft may have inadvertently caused the problem by re-categorizing and re-releasing the SSU. They say in their own documentation on SSUs that if anything gets ‘scrambled’, windows update will not function properly. It is possible that the change was done in haste and not properly tested.

KB4462923 “successfully installed” on my Win 7 Pro x64 system on Oct. 11.  Then it showed up again (unchecked) in WU.  Then went away when I re-ran “Check for updates” and is now back again (checked), wanting to be installed again.  Monday Oct 15 3:00 pm EDT.

Both the October monthly rollup and .NET rollup went away several days ago on both of my Win 7 Pro 64-bit machines.  Replaced with KB3177467 v2 on both machines.  That’s the only update listed.  I installed KB3177467 v1 on 09/12/2018 on one machine based on advice/recommendations here.  Not sure why it wasn’t.  V1 was installed on the other machine on 07/23/2017.

It looks like I will not get any further updates until I install KB3177467 v2.  Some say to install it, some say to wait because of DEFCON-1.  I wait until the weekend before Patch Tuesday to install patches, provided we’re at least at DEFCON-3.

So, while waiting for Nov. 3 or so, provided DEFCON is at least 3, is it safe to say that someone will give the all-clear to install KB3177467 v2 and that it is safe?  So I can get the October rollups provided the October rollups are safe?

That is how the MS-DEFCON system works. Keep a watch on those five colored shields at the top of every AskWoody page. Please understand that AskWoody cannot fix Microsoft’s problems for them. Once Microsoft has taken care of their mess in a reasonable way, Woody will be able to write clear directions that will not change after a few hours or the next day.

KB4462923 has been failing to install for several weeks … gave up trying to download and install it (even downloaded from the microsoft repository) … then it disappeared from my taskbar only to show back up yesterday but still fails to install … My machine is a W510 Lenovo with Lenovo supplied W7Pro 64b, I7 cpu, 8G ram, 1T hd

As I write this, I am being offered the KB in question for this thread, KB4462923. HOWEVER, it is offered by Windows Update as an “Important” update that is unchecked, which means DO NOT INSTALL at this time.  Wait until it is checked by default.

To get to this situation, I had to jump through some hoops, as it wasn’t even offered to me initially back on last Tuesday the 9th. I was only offered the monthly MSRT scanner (KB890830) and .NET monthly rollup for all current versions of .NET (KB4459922). I was also (and still am) offered the monthly security updates for Office 2010.

First, I had to hide all of the currently offered “Important” updates, then recheck for updates. I was then offered KB3177467 that was released on October 9th, which I installed and then rebooted immediately afterwards, even though Windows Update didn’t call for a reboot. I already had installed the previous version of KB3177467 back on January 4th of 2017.

After the reboot, I launched Windows Update again and proceeded to unhide all the updates I had initially hidden, KB890830, KB4459922, and all of the monthly Office 2010 updates, which forced WU to recheck for updates. I was then offered the updates I had unhidden (all listed in the “Important” tab of Windows Update) along with the September preview rollup, KB4457139, which was listed in the “Optional” tab of Windows Update.

I then hid the preview rollup listed in the “Optional” tab, KB4457139, and rechecked for updates. Now I was finally offered KB4462923, listed in the “Important tab” and unchecked.

This is how things now stand and will continue to stand until we go to MS-DEFCON 3 or higher due to the seemingly extreme uncertainty over what will happen with this month’s rollup. Same goes for the monthly security-only patch if I were in group B…wouldn’t install it until we were to go to MS-DEFCON 3 or higher.

Discussion on another thread here on AskWoody indicates that there’s a possibility of MS blending KB3177467 V2 (SSU “patch”) into the monthly rollup and re-releasing the rollup to everyone who hasn’t installed the rollup yet. Indications are that the WU detection logic would check for installation of the SSU patch V2 first and install that first if needed, then proceed with the remainder of the monthly rollup’s installation.

Stay tuned everyone, as we’ve got a lot of twists and turns left to go in this month’s saga of this Windows 7 rollup patch! 🙂

I had installed KB3177467 back on 12/27/06.

September updates installed with no problem.

On October 10th my WU showed KB4462923 and MSRT, both checked.

On October 11th my WU showed only MSRT, checked.

No change as of today.

I have never been offered KB3177467 again.

So what am I suppose to do?

As of 1:00 AM MDT on 2018/10/17, we see KB 4462923 appearing CHECKED and ready for installation in Windows Update on Windows Server 2008 R2. The only other update being offered on the our test servers is the MSRT for October. This is after manually re-checking for available updates (we do not allow them to be installed automatically, but the machines do check for updates automatically).

@geekdom:  I am very late in trying to get caught up after about 2 months of being unable to utilize the computer because of vision problems.   I’m referring to your text that references the fact that both KB4462927, and KB4462500 are not showing.   I will continue to look through all of the postings to determine if that has changed since you posted your comments.  It helps to have the feedback.   I’m not certain how to proceed at this point so I’m not making any changes at all.  Thank you for the information you provided.   🙂

Bothe of those patches @geekdom mentioned are PREVIEWS,  UNCHECKED optional updates. You don’t need to worry about them – not to be installed.

Interesting thing that happened. Decided to go ahead and install the 5 offered Office patches and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for this month (Win7, SP1). This is a computer that had the Oct Cumulative Update pulled and it hasn’t reappeared. However, after installing aforementioned patches, what shows up in available updates but KB3177467, marked as Important and checked! I have KB3177467 V1, so I assume this is V2.

(As a note, for some reason WU is not offering me Optional updates at the moment… perhaps KB3177467 blocks out all potential updates until it’s installed?)

The KB3177467 that showed up in the important update queue is v2 of the Servicing Stack. If you go ahead and install it, I think the Optional updates should reappear.

You may also see KB4462923 (2018-10 Rollup) unchecked and/or KB4462927 (2018-10 Preview) as optional unchecked. I would hold off installing either of them until the DEFCON number here is 3 or greater and there are safe patching instructions. Microsoft has done all these shenanigans for some reason (know only to them).

With regards to @Anonymous, it makes sense for KB3177467 – V2 to appear once all other important updates have been installed or hidden, since, as you have pointed out, KB3177467 – V2 is exclusive.

My situation (Windows 7, x64, Group A) is similar. I installed KB3177467 – V1 on September 12, 2018. I also installed all October updates successfully with the exception of SSU – V2 and the October monthly rollup. I, of course, hid the October preview.

Apparently, my situation differs from that of @Anonymous in that I was offered the October monthly rollup KB4462923 as important and unchecked from the beginning of this month’s update process.

As I have neither hidden nor decided to check KB4462923 and attempt to install it, I have accordingly never been offered KB3177467 – V2.

My question at this point is: has it been determined yet whether the installation of KB3177467 – V2 “on top of” KB3177467 – V1 is 1) safe and/or 2) mandatory before any future rollup can be successfully installed.

In other words, I have been unwilling at this time to hide my unchecked October monthly rollup update in order to enable WU to offer me KB3177467 – V2.

Do you know whether anyone has tested the outcome of the installation of KB3177467 – V2 followed by the installation of KB4462923? Do you know whether the installation of KB3177467 – V2 causes WU to re-check for a more recent version of KB4462923, which might then be offered as checked due to the installation of KB3177467 – V2?

It seems highly unusual that so much time has elapsed without a Microsoft recommendation on how Windows 7 users should proceed at this point.

Others have reported successfully installing KB3177467 v2 on top of v1, apparently without problems. The SSUs files are the same, it is the classification that is different – v1 is optional and v2 is security/important. I don’t believe Servicing Stacks are generally uninstallable through the normal method of right-clicking on the installed update and choosing “uninstall.”

The MS pages for the Rollup and the Security-only Update say:

If you are using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB3177467) will be offered to you automatically. To get the stand-alone package for the latest SSU, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog.

The link points to version 2.

I would WAIT to install the October updates until the DEFCON number is 3 or above. By then things may have changed (again) and Woody will have safe patching instructions.

Right. I should have been more specific. On the MS support page for the Rollup in the ‘Before Installing this Update’ section, when I click on the link for KB3177467 it takes me to the support page for that KB. When I click on the link for the ‘Microsoft Update Catalog’ I now get taken to the home page for the Catalog as opposed to the Catalog page for the SSU. Up until about 5 days ago I had been taken to the Catalog page for the SSU. Probably not a big deal, but I wonder why they would change the destination of the link.

I’m in the same boat as anonymous above.  I had the original (V1) of KB3177467 installed from back in 2016.  Last week I installed 5 Office 2010 important updates and the MSRT.

At which time KB3177467 (V2?) appeared as a new, checked and only important update. Also my Optional category containing 4 KB’s disappeared.

That’s were I stand today.  Should I proceed to install KB3177467 then hold off for Defcon 3 or just stay were I am and await further instructions from Woody?

@PKCano:   I do not have the KB3177467 showing anywhere in my update lists.   I will try to do a search to determine if perhaps it was installed at an earlier date, however as of the present I am not seeing anything, so wondering “is there any action I can take which will bring KB3177467   to the update list if I’m not showing that it was never installed?  I don’t see anything in any of my messages showing me this “Stack Update” either, so I’m “lost”.    Thank you once again for all of your most valued assistance.   🙂

Actually, it is the same update. The only difference is that MS changed its classification to make it show up as a CHECKED important update instead of being UNCHECKED and more or less hidden.
