Install this update to resolve issues in Windows.

…Imagine opaque Pinocchio nose poking through Windows logo here…

Okay, the KB page does a little better:

This problem occurs because the SchUseStrongCrypto flag is not preserved throughout the Windows upgrade process.

The documentation implies that applications will fail. Doesn’t the key being missing potentially just deconfigure the strong encryption (I admit to not being familiar with this registry entry specifically)?

I see Intuit QuickBooks is mentioned as being affected, so the encryption being discussed may be between users and their banks. I guess it’s a good thing it’s not Tax Return season – though wasn’t there just a deadline for submitting estimated taxes?

It’s good to see Microsoft fixing data security issues quickly.

UPDATE: The KB article has been modified (finally) to say:

Microsoft has now resolved this issue for some devices. An update is available on Microsoft’s Update Catalog as of August 16, 2018 for those customers who have Intuit QuickBooks installed.

These customers may also check for updates on Windows Update by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates.

For devices that do not have Intuit QuickBooks installed and who are experiencing this issue:  Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Had a client call with this issue day before yesterday. I ran quickbooks as admin and since then he hasn’t had any issues launching it. Think I’ll wait a bit before installing this update 🙂

The update is just tiny executive that merely add back the registry key noted in the article earlier
