Thanks Rui, I hope this one is more effective than the previous version 😉

Let’s hope so, I think a lot of headaches would be prevented :).

      Rui:
Thanks. The tool you pointed to resolved whatever issue was preventing 2 .Net patches from being applied to my W7 Home Premium system.

I visited the link you supplied and I have to ask you, If you’ve not noticed any problems would you install the tool anyway, mabe as a preventive tool (just in case)?

I don’t know anything about .NET Framework, so I have to ask.

If you haven’t experienced any issues installing .net updates or the .net framework itself, I don’t see the need to install the repair tool. If you experience such issues, in the future, then it will be a good time to install it.

      Regards

      Rui

      Ruirib, greetings.
I think that you are the one to ask, here goes. I do not have .net on my system at all, I also have selected “Hide this Update” in all offers. System runs fine !
What am I missing if anything ? None of my many machines has .net on them. What does it do ?
I should Google for it ! Be good.

OK, at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.NET_Framework I found enough information to dazzle my mind. Sleep well.

Since you are running Windows 7 by default you have .NET 3.5.1 installed. So, hiding .NET udpates is not necessarily the best approach.

Joe, I would like to butt in here to ask you a question. How do you determine which version of .NET is currently installed? Where on the computer are the files kept? I’ve installed every one found in Windows Updates but I have no idea where they land.

        More questions.
How many of the .NET installations are to be kept on the computer?

Is it safe to remove any found that are older the latest one?

I have no idea why it’s needed, although I do know what it is (sorta). Please forgive my ignorance.

I thank you for any information that you can give me.

        Gloria

Some .net versions come with Windows. W7 includes 3.5. You could check Programs and Features in Control Panel to see if you have later versions installed. Each .Net version may be required on its own, regardless of previous or subsequent versions. This means that previous versions should not be removed, as they may be necessary for some of your installed apps.
The .Net framework can be seen as a framework used by developers to create applications. It has quite a few advantages, from a developer’s point of view. Any apps that were developed using the framework, need to have it present in the computers where they will be run. If you have multiple versions of the .net framework, this means some of those were installed by apps that needed them and removing them can make those apps to stop working.

Thank you so much Rurib. I now understand better the working of .NET.

        According to Microsoft:

Note: The current version of the tool supports repairing the .NET Framework 4, this will be extended to include other versions of the .NET Framework in the future.”

I was hoping for what most are hoping for: a repair tool that addresses ALL versions of .NET Framework.:(

So far, I’ve not had any difficulty with the .NETs on my Win 7 laptop, but I have several XP units that each have beaucoup hidden .NET updates that are constantly reoffered. I used to cure this temporarily by uninstalling the .NETs from the most recent backwards leaving the 1.1 then reinstalling. Tedious, and then [messed up] by the next update. A tool to fix this behavior would be most welcomed.
