I have no idea why they pulled it — but the original clues came from this forum. Thanks, Marty and CharlieNJ!InfoWorld Tech Watch

I installed KB3000061 from my optional updates in Win7 before I installed KB2918614. Both are still listed as installed updates.
A comment on your InfoWorld Tech Watch article said KB3002885 replaces KB300061. This new patch shows up in my important updates. Should I uninstall the botched patch and install the new or wait?
Thx!

Yep, commenter Ivry Gates nailed it. I have a comment (and a thank you) that should appear shortly in the InfoWorld article.
For those who missed it, MS14-079/KB 3002885 replaces MS14-058/KB 3000061. It isn’t documented in the KB articles, but the swap-out appears in a table in the MS14-079 article.
For now, I would hold off on 3002885. It’s a kernel mode driver patch, and those are always hairy. Even if Microsoft gets two swings at it….

It’s unusual for a patch to slow down a machine, but it does happen. I haven’t heard of any particularly problematic slow-downs in the October bunch.
For now, hold off on the November patches. That’s why we’re at MS-DEFCON 2. In a couple of weeks, I’ll look again and if everything looks OK, I’ll move to MS-DEFCON 3, 4 or (just maybe) 5. At that point it’s OK to go ahead and patch.

AskWoody PlusNovember 14, 2014 at 9:15 am #52244I checked and the KB3000061 patch was installed from the October bunch. No apparent problems here on my Win 7 HP 64 bit computer, which is the only one that gets updated. Thanks for the heads up.

AskWoody_MVPNovember 14, 2014 at 11:39 am #52245@woody: just wanted to say that KB2952664 V5 installed perfectly on my Win7 machines. On the other hand, I haven’t installed KB2949927 and I’ll hold off indefinitely on that patch until Microsoft issues a revised one.
KB3000061 is still available at Microsoft download center and I can still access the KB3000061 patch downloads there. So they have not completely removed those patches.

GuestNovember 19, 2014 at 6:56 am #52246I have tried to install KB3002885 (which is supposed to be the replacer for KB3000061) on several Windows Server 2012 (both virtual and not) and every single one of them failed to install it. Whats worse, it caused all updates in the same batch to fail as well and it has taken me hours to find the culprit. Really annoying and no fix presented yet. A workaround by deleting something in the registry is somewhere, but honestly, that should not be necessary for a windows update patch.
