• Microsoft Office Files are slow to open

I am using Office 2003 with all service packs and the Office 2007 file converter add-in. I recently moved the installation to a new Windows7-64bit machine.

Everything works fine except for one annoying problem. When I open a program, say Excel or Word, and then click on a file, the file opens instantly. It is very fast. However, if I first double-click on a file I want to open (an Excel or Word file), it will take anywhere from 45-seconds to a minute for the file to open.

Security settings and anti-virus programs don’t seem to be a factor. File size is not a factor. The slow-down occurs only if I first click on the file rather than if I first open the program and then click on the file. It only happens with Office. PDF and other file types are not affected.

You would think the total time would be about the same:

      (A) Start Program manually + Open File

      (B) Launch file in Windows Explorer => Windows opens program then opens file

If there is a big difference in the aggregate, perhaps there is some add-in that doesn’t start up as smoothly when launching a file??

Of course, the path needs to be cleared before the attempt.

Please explain what you mean by “clear the path.”

        Thanks
