Microsoft Office Assistant Running Amok

I have a friend who said that even when he is not running any Microsoft programs (except Windows 98), the Office Assistant Paperclip pops up. I had him restart his computer, and he says it’s still coming up. He is not located close enough for me to physically look, but we’ve talked on the phone and he assures me that the only thing related to Microsoft is Windows 98. Any ideas?

My personal recommendation would be: the next time the little appears, click on its ‘options’ button and then uncheck the box marked, ‘Use the Office Assistant’. No more Paperclip.

Saying that, I don’t know why it appears with Office closed. Has he scanned for viruses, with updated virus definitions?

Yes. We scanned with updated DAT – no virus found. I had already told him to right click and hid the little @#$!%. He said, today, that it hasn’t come back. So, who knows… oh well. At least it’s gone
