    Good afternoon, everyone!

    I need help…

Quick question; I have a Dell 8700 desktop PC running Windows 8.1.  The Microsoft July updates included KB5004298.  However, the update does not successfully install, as I receive the following error message: “We couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes.

I’ve tried installing the update several times, however, I receive the same error message.  I also tried installing the update in Safe Mode, but to no avail.

I searched the Internet for an answer and noticed one other person having the same problem.

Does anyone have a suggestion to solve my update issue?

    Thanks so much!

    John

Did you receive any error code with the message to give an idea of what’s causing the failure? Perhaps in Update History of in Event Viewer?

        Hi, PKCano:

        Thanks for your response.

I did not receive an error code post installation attempt.

I looked in Event Viewer, but could not find an entry for Update History.  If such an entry exists, can you provide information on how to view it?

Update History is in Settings App\Update & Security\Windows Update.
It is one of the links that is under the Windows Update queue.
Look under the top section and under “Quality updates.”

            Thanks, PKCano.

Here is what I found: The error code is as follows: 800F0922.

See attached PDF file with a screen shot of the error.

Any help you can provide would be helpful.

Did you remove/uninstall Chromium Edge from your computer? That error code is often associated with improper removal of it.
See this post #2372696, the section about Removing Chromium Edge and particularly the “Note of Caution” below the code.
You have to remove the whole path up to the “Edge” folder.

              Hi, PKCano:

I have never removed or uninstalled Chromium Edge from my computer.  As a matter of fact, Legacy Edge and Chromium Edge have been my default browsers since their release.

This is what I see when I follow the path in the cited post:

              “C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\91.0.864.70\Installer”

In that folder, I see the following two files:

              msedge_7z.data and setup

              Any recommendations?

Just curious, PKCano, could this issue be the result of Microsoft trying to get people to move from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10/11?

              Thanks, as always,

              John

I know this will probably mess up your customized settings, but I would suggest uninstalling Edge and reinstalling it.

The procedure for removal using the Command Prompt (note part about using default Prompt location) in that linked post is for Win10 (disregard the part for Registry and Group Policy changes to block Edge from reinstalling). In Win8.1 you may be able to use the Control Panel. But after the removal you should remove the directory structure if it still exists. That’s what causes the error.
Then download and reinstall from MS.

You might want to look around on the Internet for that error code. I personally dealt with it in Win10, not Win8.1. There was an article about it on ghacks.com or bleepingcomputer.com a few months ago when we first saw it.

I hope that you already have found the solution. But, this is what I think you are running into. I ran into this as well. PKCano has the right idea. But, the issue is with the removal of Adobe Flash.

The KB5004298 update is looking for 2 Flash folders on the C drive:

              C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash
              C:\Windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash

Make sure your C drive has these folders. If one or both are missing you will get the error that you describe. Create a folder(s) if either is missing, and rerun the update. It should complete successfully.

              Holy Cow, Anonymous!

After months of trying to resolve this issue, yours was the only one that successfully allowed me to install my Windows 8.1 updates.

Recently, I uninstalled Flash.  So, I simply created the two Flash folders you suggested, and my Windows 8.1 updates installed flawlessly.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
