This really shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. Lawrence Abrams at BleepingComputer talks about KB 4576754, the “Update for the new Microsoft Edg

AskWoody MVPSeptember 15, 2020 at 8:20 am #2296490Of my five fully updated installations of Windows 10 Pro, only my NAS has Chredge, but it does not have KB4576754 shown in either Update history (Update & Security or Programs and Features). None of my installations show that particular update. Evidently there are other methods of Chredge installation.
I won’t be using it, regardless. I use Firefox exclusively – I won’t nothing at all to do with Google, even in the most remote sense.
Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things. We were all once "Average Users". -

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 15, 2020 at 8:29 am #2296491You are better off having Edge Chromium installed then Edge legacy. Microsoft isn’t doing any development on Edge legacy anymore. They only release security fixes for it. I have even noticed some are indicating that some web sites are informing Edge legacy users that it doesn’t support that browser anymore. Even if you don’t plan on using Edge Chromium as a primary browser. Its a far better backup then the original Edge. I still stick with Chrome even though I have no interest in any Google services, I don’t even use a Google account sign in. I just like Chrome as a browser and have tried a couple clone’s and just did not impress.

GuestSeptember 15, 2020 at 2:09 pm #2296575I have the Chromium-based Edge browser installed on one of my three Windows 7 x64 SP1 computers; and of course it is automatically installed on my one Windows 10 Home version 2004 laptop when it upgraded to 2004 from 1909. My other two Windows 7 x64 SP1 computers have the “Chredge” update (KB4567409) hidden. On the one Windows 7 Home PC that has “Chredge” (which I almost never launch) installed, I’ve noticed some peculiar update behavior. It updates like Chrome does, independently and directly, not through Windows Update like the Security Intelligence updates for MSE do. But apparently the “Chredge” update process sometimes fails. Although the failed update process does not show up in the Event Viewer as either an error or a warning, it does show up in WER (Windows Error Reporting under System Configuration\System Information\Software Environment\Windows Error Reporting). On one occasion it generated ten WER messages in the space of one minute; and on a different day it generated twenty-five consecutive WER messages in the space of two minutes. These messages generated in the background when Windows Update was not being used; but they show up as Windows Update error messages in WER. I guess “Chredge” uses an abbreviated or mini version of Windows Update to update itself when we are not paying attention. At other times, according to the Programs and Features list under Control Panel, it has updated itself with no problems (that computer is always connected to the internet via wi-fi when it is booted up and running, it’s not a connection issue). So I guess even “Chredge” has updating issues under Windows.

AskWoody MVPSeptember 16, 2020 at 7:33 am #2296699I can’t even imagine those kinds of speeds (though I don’t have any displays over 1080p either). I have 4% of gigabit downstream and 0.2% upstream. This connection now is the fastest I’ve ever had, and the fastest available here too (though I am paying the same amount that I would if I had something 20 times faster if it were available, so at least I get that part of the gigabit experience). My ISP has a flat price for “the fastest speed we have available,” so I literally pay the same that I would for 20 times the speed if they would ever bring it here.

GuestSeptember 16, 2020 at 4:18 am #2296670I’d do it if I didn’t want to keep old Edge around for testing until people actually stop using it. Plus, honestly, I like the UI better, even though I use Chrome. It’s mostly just the tab bar, which I hope Microsoft brings to CHrome. For some reason, Chrome gives way too much white space–it doesn’t understand the font setting in Windows 10 is supposed to only make the text bigger, not the elements. That’s the difference between it and the DPI setting, which is for all elements.
