    Hi,

I have a copy of MS Development Envt 6.0 installed on my PC – I think (?) it was a by-product of installing Frontpage 2000??

Does anyone know where I can get a ‘standalone’ installation copy of MS DE 6.0?? The principal reason for this is the excellent Help file associated with the program – which contains programming refs for JScript, VBScript, HTML, DHTML, ASP etc etc all in one place.

I’m leaving my current job in a few weeks and want to get a copy of MS DE 6.0 onto my home PC. I’ve hunted high and low on microsoft.com, but with no luck.

    Can anyone help me please?

    Cheers,

    Ade

I can’t find anything at MS either.
Are you sure about the name? (MS DE comes up as Design Engine!)
I’ve got FP2000 & FP2002 here so I’ll gladly try and hunt down where it came from if I can.
Have you got the names of any files associated with it that may give us a clue?

Thanks for getting back to me. Here’s some info…

gives the name as “Microsoft Development Environment 6.0” Copyright 1987 -1999. Version Number: 8392 –

The exe that starts up the program is called MSE.exe and its installed in “C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioCommonIDEIDE98”

(Note: I don’t have Visual Studio and have never installed it)

Right clicking on MSE.exe gives the file version as “6.01.8392”.

I don’t have any more than that I’m affriad.

        Cheers,

        Ade

Thanks for the pointer…no joy though.

Its a 20Mb download that, on installation, appears to do nothing but provide a facility to connect to an SQL server backend – i.e no GUI to speak of.

I’ll keep searching – thanks for your help.

The link I gave you led in turn to another link (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/msde/download.asp) which would allow you to download MSDE.
However, you need to have a registered copy of Visual Studio to be able to do that.
What is confusing me is that you have a folder for Visual Studio, but yet you don’t have a copy of that software and have never installed it!

              But…

MSE.exe is Microsoft Script Editor and comes with Office 2000.

is that what you are looking for?

hello Ade I hate to be frivolous on a serious board but you have to be hallucinating. You will never find the program you think you are looking for because MS doesn’t know how to write a good help file so this program can’t really exist. I think all MS help files are written by their Ad men.

Seriously I really would like to see this help file so I will be watching here. Be sure to let us know when you do run it down.

I have it as a result of an MS Office 2000 install. I have Developers’ edition- but it’s also on our work machines with a standard install- though I don’t know if that came as a result of Front Page being installed on some machines.

If it’s just the help files, check the Microsoft site- many of their help files are available on line. While you’ve still got mse.exe, find a helk topic with an unusual word or two, and search microsoft.com

OK, I’m getting somewhere now. This KB page confirms that MSE (as I’ve also discovered its officially referred to) is installed as part of Office2k.

I’ve had a look on a Project2k cdrom, but can’t find it – so I’m off home tonight to have a look at the Frontpage2k cdrom. It must have come from there.

I’ve done detailed searches on MSDN download centre, MS downloads and the (new – have you seen it?) MS Support site – no joy. Guess it looks like its an install on demand package and not a standalone thats available from MS.

The KB article above also confirms that its installed in a directory called M’ S’ Visual Studio – even though I’ve never installed Visual Studio – guess that answers your question Leif?

        Cheers for now,

        Ade

          I just had a quick check on my FP200 CD . . .

          In folder …PFilesvstudiocommonideide98 I have found mse.exe V6.1.83.92

I guess that answers everyone’s questions!

The Microsoft Script Editor does not appear to be a freely available download. The Windows Script De######, which is freely available, has not impressed me as a useful tool.

My understanding has always been that the MS Development Environment is a stripped down version of the VS6 DevEn.

(VS6 pre-dated Ofiice 2000, and the installation directory structure (e.g.”C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioCommonIDEIDE98″) is the same.)

OK KT obviously I haven’t used all of the MS help files. As big as they are they have to have one or two that work. I am a Quicken abuser so I never delved into MSMoney. But recently two programs, one was Frontpage Express and the other Outlook, really irritated me. FPE has 4 help pages and they all say FPE does this great but not how to use it to do it. I am just working up my ambition to attempt some html to make a web page and am hoping to find a decent help file on it.

Please don’t send me to MS on line. That is another one that is beyond my capabilities to comprehend. I just wait for someone to post a link on something I am interested in and then go see what they recommended. Can’t make up my mind if that means I am too smart to reinvent the wheel or too lazy to do my own research.

But I am learning more everyday
