To be honest I’m not very hopeful of finding a fix for this but thought I’d ask anyway in case a miracle might come my way.

I went to use Microsoft Defender Offline Scan (Windows 10 Home 22H2) and it didn’t work. I’ve used it before so I know it has worked in the past, but it isn’t working now. Normally, when you click Scan Now > Scan, a dialog will open and say Windows will reboot in 1 minute; but that doesn’t happen. Nothing happens. I ran shutdown /r from the Command Prompt and the message opened; so apparently it can open. I tried to reboot manually to see if the scan would run, but nothing.

I went through the list of fixes listed here: https://www.minitool.com/backup-tips/windows-defender-offline-scan-not-working.html but couldn’t find a fix that worked. I tried running Offline Scan from the Command Prompt and PowerShell: no good.

I tried removing all definitions per the instructions, but it didn’t do anything; no definitions were removed. It returned an error: ERROR: MpRollbackSignature failed with hr=80070005. From what I’ve found, that error seems to indicate that I lack the required permissions. I have an Administrator account and I ran the Command Prompt as Administrator; so my guess is the definitions are located in a system folder somewhere which I don’t have permission to access.

I checked Exclusions. I checked Services and found two Microsoft Defender Antivirus services and both were running. I ran SFC, DISM, and CHKDSK. I don’t have any third-part antivirus software running. Somewhere I read that disabling Fast Startup might fix it but it didn’t. I believe I’ve tried every fix I could find with no luck.

From what I’ve read this seems to be a common issue for a lot of people. Microsoft Defender Antivirus works in every other respect. Anyone have any suggestions?

Surprise surprise, it started working. I ran a full system scan then tried it again and it worked this time. That’s the only thing I can think of I didn’t try. Maybe that’s the way you have to do it. Anyway, I’m just relieved it finally ran.

Another way to run Defender Offline is using the PowerShell command  Start-MpWDOScan

The scan results are stored in the file msssWrapper.log located in C:\Windows\Microsoft Antimalware\Support

True. As I mentioned in my OP I tried command prompt and powershell  but neither one worked. They’re good alternatives, if they work.

Might be time to do an in-place upgrade.

      Hey Y’all,

I just ran the PowerShell command on both my Minisforum UM790 Pro and DellXPS8920 both running W11 Pro 23H2 and everything worked as it should.

May the Forces of good computing be with you!
