AskWoody LoungerDecember 21, 2017 at 12:04 pm #153646Another month and another round of patching follies. When will MS get its act together and realize releasing buggy patches with seemly random screw ups is not a good way to keep customers? Not everyone needs Windows for what they do on a computer so there are options available for people. MS seems to be counting on inertia to keep customers which is recipe for failure in the long term.

GuestDecember 30, 2017 at 9:46 am #154879I would like to know how to stop KB4054517 from trying to download every time I shut down and restart my computer. It will get to 99% and that’s all. Then I get a failed to install. I would like to stop this until Microsoft comes out with a fix. I have not done anything to try to stop, because I’m not very technology literate.

ManagerDecember 30, 2017 at 10:15 am #154887You can read Woody’s ComputerWorld article linked in the main blog.
Microsoft’s KB 4054517 article provides a workaround. However, if you have the Home version, in the Settings App you can set your internet connection to “don’t download over metered connection.” If you have the Pro version, under Updates and security you can set it to “defer quality updates 30 days.”
Woody also has a ComputerWorld article on how to turn off Windows Update and another article on how to block Windows Update.
