Is there any real difference between using OneDrive as a cloud backup (putting individual files there) and using the official Microsoft Backup service?

I tried to start the backup once and having a memory of theย  apps was already there in my Microsoft account (based on what I saw onscreen) and then they wanted to backup my files – but I already have them in the cloud, so I declined because that’s incurring more storage usage for no reason.

So, since Microsoft Account has my apps, is the backup service different than just using the cloud for files?

In case it might be helpful, Ask Leo has a written and recorded recent piece on this called: “The Problem With One Drive Backup”.

Great video.ย  Microsoft has been pushing hard to enable this backup feature.ย  But glad i skipped the full backup feature.ย  I didn’t know that if you stop the full backup feature, you might lose data.

using the official Microsoft Backup service?

Microsoft backup isn’t a real full backup.
For backup you should use a full image backup app (with incremental / differential backups)

I wouldn’t back up a post-it note on the cloud.ย  The ‘cloud’ — to me, anyway — is someone elses computer/server(s).ย  You don’t know where it is.ย  You don’t know who has direct access to it. And you’ll never see it or touch it.ย  Too many unknowns for me.

The โ€˜cloudโ€™ โ€” to me, anyway โ€” is someone elses computer/server(s).

You are correct.ย  Yet there is safe upside to the cloud. Used correctly it will protect all digital assets from any natural disaster. If your house burns down, you stuff is safe.
