How can I keep Microsoft from updating my version of Skype. I am happy with my present version and unhappy with the update. ]

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

AskWoody LoungerMarch 29, 2014 at 6:35 pm #1446895Perhaps the OP is using the words Microsoft & Skype interchangeably because Skype has become a Microsoft acquisition.
I’m very confident Zig means, the Skype installer still comes separately from skype.com and not microsoft.com, although both contract with geographically separated Akamai Technology CDN servers.
If the OP would like to fallback to a previous version of Skype, a thorough uninstall, followed by a install/re-install of the previous desired version, is available from FileHippo.com via http://filehippo.com/download_skype/.

Sadly that link now only downloads SkypeSetup.exe (1.6MB), which is only a ‘stub’ to install the program over the internet. And I’m sure that it will install the latest version. What FileHippo show as ‘Older Versions ‘ is only Skype 6.5.0.107 Beta, which is in fact a later version.
Softpedia allows the download of the complete offline installer, but only for the latest version.
This site PowerGramo appears to offer all previous versions of Skype. I have no experience of this site, so cannot vouch for its safety.

I do sincerely apologize for not checking in a more thorough manner. And I do agree; the path to older downloads is fraught with danger.
I have just checked -http://www.oldskype.com/- where old/full Skype downloads seem to exist.
DISCLAIMER: I recommend you do not go further! The above site does appear to have a repository of older Skype versions. However, I can not attest to their safety. If one were to download from them, you would do well to immediately upload to Virus Total for an evaluation. If an installation were still to be attempted, at least insure the target system has had a recent full system backup.
If a forum moderator were to delete any or all of this post, I would understand completely.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 31, 2014 at 8:11 am #1447051You need to setup Windows update differently. WU defaults to automatic download and install unless you change it. Open WU and go to “Change settings” on the left. You will see that under the “Important updates” section that Automatic is selected. Open the drop down box and select the one where it checks and then you select which one to download and install. The ones for Skype will still come in, but you can choose not to install them by not checking the check box. You can also hide them by right clicking on the one you want to hide and they will not come in again until a newer version comes along. Now you will get a notice in the lower right corner when updates are available. If you uncheck the box under “recommended updates”, I believe the Skype ones will not show up, but neither will other ones.
