Some people are getting a “Preview” version of it. I also have seen that Edge seems to have a version of it now. Is this still a “beta” version in these cases?

Great, another potential minefield for medical providers trying to comply with patient privacy rules. At least for now this is only rolling out to entities with 300+ seats, which in the medical world would mean hospitals or large group practices. Those entities are big enough to have someone on staff who will be fully aware of the potential issues and can act to head off trouble.

My church has 10 non-profit “Business Premium” seats of Microsoft 365, and I am using one of them.  Copilot appeared magically two or three weeks ago in my Windows 11 toolbar after an update.  Not knowing what it was, and assuming it was essentially “son of Clippy,” I hid the icon.  Life seems to go on without it.

That the copilot for Windows, not the Copilot for Microsoft 365 that will be embedded in Word/Excel, etc etc.

InControl seems to be working.  I don’t see 23H2 in my Windows Update.

You won’t see 23H2 in WU yet.. Currently you can install the October Preview KB5031455 followed by the hidden from catalog KB5027397 enablement package which activates the upgrade (a very small file) 23H2 enablement zip

unzip and install

Just done this earlier today, now on 23H2 No problems, all is well on that sub-threshhold device.

Saves downloading a 6Gb iso, I’ll do that later once the ‘New Seekers’ have abaited.

The W11 November CU will likely offer 23H2 enablement via WU for those who don’t do previews.
FYI: No Copilot here, as it’s hidden/blocked by O&O Shutup settings 😛

Ok there us a distinction between Copilot for Windows and Microsoft 365 Copilot. I just updated a computer with 23H2 which apparently was released today. A Happy Halloween from Microsoft. Still no Copilot on my Microsoft account. Will continue to look.

We don’t plan on using it. Anything from/with Microsoft is often problematic. We also have our long-standing security policies which diminish destructive or experimental changes by Microsoft, and we keep drive images for the truly rare occasions when something goes unexpectedly south.

…Windows devices using more than one (1) monitor might experience issues with desktop icons moving unexpectedly between monitors or other icon alignment issues when attempting to use Copilot in Windows (in preview).

To prevent users from encountering this issue, Copilot in Windows (in preview) might not be available on devices that have been used or are currently being used in a multimonitor configuration.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release

good catch – though I have 2 I usually use just one but wil remain aware of possible oddities.

CoPilot in Windows will not be available if one has a local account. I tried to switch to a local account in Windows 11, but find that option is not available now.  I don’t have CoPilot because of other measures I have taken.

CoPilot in Windows seems to be a super Cortana.  For instance, you ask it to switch the computer to dark mode, so it searches around and comes back, “Do you want me to switch to dark mode?”  Heck, you just told it to do it!  Why does it have to ask if it’s so smart?  Then it will say, “Ask me anything”, which is what I think Cortana used to say.

You are correct B.  I missed it because it is somewhat hidden.  I switched to a local account so now I am protected from Windows CoPilot (for now).:)

I also backed up my Bitlocker recovery key.

Windows Copilot is still dumb like a rock

Microsoft launched Windows Copilot with some fanfare alongside the Windows 11 2023 Update. Microsoft promised that the baked-in artificial intelligence would assist Windows users “in work, creation and play”. Copilot is “designed to accelerate your tasks, reduce friction and save you time” according to Microsoft’s announcement on the Windows Experience Blog.

One of Microsoft’s promises was that Copilot would help users run tasks on Windows. Without that, Copilot would just be Bing Chat added as a sidebar to Windows…

Asking Copilot to launch Notepad, for instance, results in an “I’m sorry” message. Copilot claims that it is a chat mode of Microsoft Bing and not an assistant..

The simple “enable dark mode” request is met with a huge wall of text that explains how to enable Dark Mode on Windows. Copilot, however, doesn’t enable dark mode automatically on the user’s request…

While trying to find the right command to get Copilot to switch to dark mode or at least display a button that does that, it suddenly suggested to enable Do Not Disturb on the system…

No matter the instruction, Windows Copilot always replied with a “can’t do, I’m not an assistant” type of message…

(regular windows copilot) That’s interesting – I had not thought to ask it a question like that. For me, a (non-working) button popped up followed by a text choice of yes or no. I clicked yes and by gosh it flipped to dark mode. How wonderful!!! (note of sarcasm there) ( However, I recently did googles to figure out how to shut off Backup and clear my (old) stuff on OneDrive, so in the future I will try (windows) copilot(preview) for that. Still, though, it is just Bing and I never much liked Bing… If that is all this is, I will shut it off. But will leave it on for now. <amused>

If you do a google or bing search it saves your history and uses that in future searches. Perhaps that is what MS is calling AI. Oh well! Not only is the sky not falling but it apparently has been reinforced with just a label change. We’ll see!

But as someone noted, win11 (ootb)(out of the box – no Start or menu or such mods) does seem a bit more sprightly than 10 was, and all in all I am pleased to be on it. I have to keep reminding myself that Mint is not really an alternative because of the 3 or so windows apps I need.

Harvesting people data goes live! To use it for marketing and generating more profit. Without any consent. How far can Microsoft go without any audit?

If this is the future of AI, I am very disapointed. At the same time quality seems very poor right now.

Mine was a little different: I do like that it admits that it is Bing. Cortana -> Bing -> copilot – different names for the same thing. Maybe slightly advanced in phraseology. The sky is not falling. Yet.

Yes, I am an AI. I am a chat mode of Microsoft Bing, and I can help you with various tasks and queries. I can also generate creative content such as poems, stories, code, and more. 😊

To certain extent I think it is like a Furby. If you talk trash to it you will get trash. At some point some fine person will come up with a way to reset what it has “learned” . In the meantime you might find it useful to take care with it, like you would a child. Or a HAL 9000.

Since I do not need a copilot unless I am flying a plane, I just added google to my taskbar (via chrome, google.com, sign in, more tools, create shortcut, check in window, pin to taskbar.)(I also signed up for the waitlist for google’s “AI”.)

If one uninstalls Edge and removes Bing from the Program Files\WindowsApps folder, Copilot is a non-issue.  I don’t know if it was in the December updates or the January updates, but the Copilot preview icon is no longer on the Taskbar, nor does it show as Hidden in the Taskbar Properties (which was its previous condition).

Yes, I do have Microsoft 365, but there’s no sign of Copilot in any of those apps, either.

Always create a fresh drive image before making system changes/Windows updates; you may need to start over!

We all have our own reasons for doing the things that we do with our systems; we don't need anyone's approval, and we don't all have to do the same things.

We were all once "Average Users".
