GuestDecember 14, 2018 at 7:14 am #240301I strongly believe consumers shouldn’t have to pay anything to stop forced updates.

You should never have to pay to use the computer you own.7 users thanked author for this post.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 14, 2018 at 7:40 am #240310Wait, what, discontinue sales of retail licenses of Windows 10 Pro? Yeah, that might be a problem for some business users too… as OEM licenses aren’t allowed to be installed in virtual machines.
This kind of thing might be a bit of a problem in other ways too.
Oh well, subscription schemes do have some added fun features with consumer protection laws in some countries…

GuestDecember 14, 2018 at 8:04 am #240322Forcing me to pay a subscription to use Windows 10 Pro would just make me abandon Windows altogether on a personal level. I don’t need Windows that badly. I’ve only ever used Pro versions, going back to XP, so I’m not suddenly going to start using Home now to avoid a subscription.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 14, 2018 at 9:18 am #240378Windows as a Service strikes again!
This fits in perfectly with the goal of eliminating or changing Windows 10 Pro so that it’s little more than Windows Home with better networking AND on a subscription model (constant money stream to Redmond).
Don’t rely on keeping the ability to block updates in W10, either…I’m sure WAAS would eliminate that option (along with other user modifications). It will be either MS’s way or the highway, it seems.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 14, 2018 at 12:11 pm #240480Another subscription is something I do not want. Many are already paying monthly fees for phone, cable (or streaming), internet access, utilities, etc. Another fee would one more item that must be paid off the top every month. Most are probably trying to reduce or limit their fees so adding another may force a decision about what to do to avoid them. Forcing a financially driven decision could easily back fire as how critical is having access to the last and worst version of Office is to the average home user or any the stuff bundled with it. They probably do not use the bundled stuff now and probably do not use Office all that frequently. Also, there usage is probably on the simple end of the spectrum which means almost any office suite (FOSS or commercial) would likely be overkill anyway.
This sounds like something a bean counter came up with while not thinking through the implications of the scenario. Great on paper but probably will be much less successful in the real world.

AskWoody PlusDecember 14, 2018 at 5:31 pm #240568I buy a new car, and Sirius hounds me for months about a subscription. Talk about selling vaporware! That’s the deal today. All that money the government promised you, we’re going to vacuum it out of your wallet. Until all you little people can manage to do is struggle to the Dollar General, which will take the rest.

AskWoody LoungerDecember 18, 2018 at 12:47 pm #241032“if you need to subscribe to (and pay for) MS 365 Consumer in order to block forced updates on your machine… yeah, that’s a compelling reason to fork out some money.”
Respectfully, NO. However, it IS a compelling reason to consider any of the good alternatives like Linux, BSDs, Chromeboxen, even Mac.
