If I set “metered connection to “on” and then I “un-paused” Windows update, what

will happen. Does it start to dowload automaticaly or there is a delay ?

Windows will download and install everything. Unpause is bad, m’kay.

Download and run WUmgr and check what updates are available. You can then hide the ones you don’t want and finally unpause.

You say “You can then hide the ones you don’t want and finally unpause.”

So does it mean that WUmgr can see what updates are avalaible even when Windows update is on pause ? (I’m asking that because Wushowhide cannot see updates if Windows update is on pause.) Thanks.

WUmgr has a check button that is not controlled by WU pause – it’s the circle thingy.

      NOT entirely true, Paul

sometimes Windows may automatically download but do NOT install everything right away with a metered connection. I know from experience.

      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/metered-connections-in-windows-10-7b33928f-a144-b265-97b6-f2e95a87c408

A metered connection is an Internet connection that has a data limit associated with it. Cellular data connections are set as metered by default. Wi-Fi and Ethernet network connections can be set to metered but aren’t by default. Some apps might work differently on a metered connection to help reduce your data usage. Also, some updates for Windows won’t be installed automatically.

I don’t feel happy relying on “sometimes”, so I don’t use pause. Give me the “definite” of WUmgr any day.

Nothing drastic will happen. Use Wushowhide to hide the updates you don’t want.
Be sure to follow the steps in  https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/2000013-how-to-clear-the-windows-update-queue-in-win10 to download and install only those updates that you want.

Once upon a time metered was useful protection against unwanted updates. Now it is not, at least some of the time. WUMgr works. StopUpdates10 has a pause forever feature that works by setting some reg keys, as well as a brutal kill Windows Update set of features.

Metered stops all my updates. What problems do you have?

I don’t have specific examples I can cite, but I’ve had to go to tools like StopUpdate10 to avoid updates from happening on their own.  Not always, but it has happened over the last 1/2 year or more.  That’s a change from a few years ago when it was reliable.

My experience differs quite the opposite. A few years back I also used StopUpdate 10 due to difficulties controlling the update process but for now find  the ‘metered connection’ switch and the ability to pause updates in combination with Microsoft’s wushowhide tool to be reliable enough for me to perform updates with confidence.
