I’ve scanned a document (4 pages) and would like to merge them into a single pdf.

I googled and most of the solutions were online services, which, due to the confidential nature of the docs, I won’t use.

I’m looking for a free solution, because it’s something I’ll rarely use.

I use Foxit Reader to scan to PDF. It’s easy to scan to a single document, it’s free and it’s a nice PDF viewer into the bargain.
Alternatively, scan to LibreOffice and export to PDF – less straight forward.

      cheers, Paul

Try NAPS2. It is free, extremely simple to use, and it will scan multiple pages into a single PDF document.

I probably explained badly…the documents I scanned were already pdf’s, so I have 4 pdf files that I would like to combine into one pdf document.

Import them into your word processor then export to PDF.

I use Word 2010…just went into it but couldn’t work out how to import a pdf to Word; would appreciate a clue or two.

I believe Paul meant to import the scan into Word first using Microsoft Document Imaging under Office tools. I don’t believe the default Office install will install this feature. You may have to go to Control Panel> programs and Features > Microsoft Office and click on change to install it.

Nope! I meant import the PDF into Word. I use LibreOffice and can import PDFs so I assumed Word would too. Was I mistaken?

Because of licensing issues, no Word version before 2007 could even create PDFs and Word 2013 is the first to be able to read them.

Thanks, Jerry, but I was looking for something simpler along the lines of a pdf merge utility, but not an online one; not critical though, I can send 4 pdf encrypted files to the intended recipient with little extra work.

I use Acrobat Pro and there’s a feature in that version that allows you to do this. I don’t know of a “free” product that would combine the two.

If it’s a one-off thing and you’d like me to do it for you, I’d be happy to.

I use Bullzip PDF Printer as my daily, go-to pdf creator. Bullzip enables appending to an existing pdf. Thus, you can open pdf #2 in another app (such as Foxit Reader or Adobe Reader) and “reprint” it through Bullzip, appending the output to pdf #1. Do the same for pdfs #3 and #4 and you’ll have all four pages in pdf #1.

I use Bullzip as well, never realized it had that function, that should do it, thanks!

The Scan function on my HP All-in-One printer will allow scanning documents and save as either .pdf or .jpg. It always prompts if I want to do another page and will save all the pages as one file. I’d print the individual documents and scan as one.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"

Adobe Acrobat Pro, version 8, is available as a free download, from http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4683-adobe-acrobat-8-free.html – make a note of the serial# mentioned there.

Freepdf (http://freepdfxp.de/), a PDF printer, will do this. Open each PDF in your normal PDF reader then print to FreePDF. Select the box ‘add to next PDF’ and do the rest. Uncheck the box on the last one and it will produce a nice merged PDF of all of them.

This is the free utility that I use for doing that:

For a one-off or rare event, just download a free trial of any program that will do the job, and there is nothing wrong with starting at the top. Get the latest and greatest, or make a note of it and save it for an occasion when you figure you’ll have a month’s work for it to do for you, and pick a lesser choice for the present.

Obviously it will have to be something that offers a trial version, and you normally only get to try it once, typically for 30 days.
