A little word of advice for those who are frightened (like me) of accepting that their memory chips may be faulty.

I have had tremendous trouble with my system, bad booting, blue screens of death, STOP messages in particular 0X0000008E most searches referred to memory, finally in desperation I downloaded the Microsoft Memory Checker, created the floppy and changed the boot sequence and viola! first pass an error, left to run for 4 passes of 8 tests, error every time.

Removed the 512 chip from slot 2 again ran the checker “No Problem”

Removed the 512 chip from slot 1 replaced with the one removed from slot 2, errors every second or third pass. temporary replacement of unknown brand 256 chip. Tested for 4 hours no problem.

The original memory was Kingston???

You should buy from a known brand of memory but the MAIN thing is to get the proper type of memory for your machine,

If you go to CRUCIAL it will check the proper memory for your machine.

Hi Bob,

I have had a look at the Crucial Memory Advisor before, and the recommendation was in my case partly odd. Most of the recommended memory types are probably great, and the brand is certainly good, but among the recommended types are three (2100, 2700, 3200) 1 GB memory types. The specified motherboard does not take more than 512 MB per slot, so my manual says.

I think Crucial offers a “money-back” option if you have chosen your memory erroneously, but as a result of using their memory checker tool…

It might be worth it to drop Crucial a note telling them about the apparent discrepancy with your MB. Since you are aware of this, it could save another person the hassle of not getting the proper type of stick and having to return and exchange it.

Crucial may even put you on their “Good guys list” and give you a discount on a future order?

Just a WAG, but sometimes Crucial bundles 1 Gig “kits” (2 512mb sticks) into one ptroduct number. Otherwise, go with your user’s manual.

Hmm, I have all that video to edit before spring. Maybe I need to look into some more Ram?

It’s not my thread and initial question; I only wanted to point at some odd things.

OK, they maybe do bundles, will check.

However, thanks for your answers. I wasn’t really looking for memory to my machine at the time I looked at their Advisor, and I’m not so into buying over the net. That said, I could certainly need some more memory; initially 256 MB (WinXP), after one year got memory problem bought another 256 MB. For some time I tried to use both (always nice with 512 or more), then after an awful week in October I throw out the old memory, and it has been running nice and steady since, but with 256 MB.

All that said, from what I have heard Crucial is a fine brand. Now days I also could get 512 MB at the same price I paid for my 256 MB.

I would also like to add that MS Memory check is a good tool, among some other memory checkers.

I buy Crucial for the computers in my office. Lots of computers. Rarely a problem. Recomended.
