I am running Win XP Prof on a laptop. I would like to be able to connect to my home network when at home (Client for Microsoft Networks), and to the office network when at work (also Client for Microsoft Networks).
I don’t seem to be able to add a second network configuration. Do I need a second network adapter card ?

You probably need to checkout this:

HOW TO: Use the Alternate Configuration Feature for Multiple Network Connectivity in Windows XP (Q283676)

      The summary says:
“This article describes how to use the Alternate Configuration functionality to establish multiple-network connectivity. If you are a mobile computer user, you can use the Alternate Configuration functionality to maintain seamless operations on both office and home networks without having to manually reconfigure TCP/IP settings.”

        Thanks Leif,
That should have been very helpful, but the instructions they give don’t pan out for me.
Point 6 is impossible for me to do (“Click the Alternate Configuration tab”) because there is no Alternate Configuration tab to click. I wonder why …

Are you using DHCP at one of the locations?

I don’t know what DHCP is, Leif. I will try to find out when I go in to the office in a few minutes.

The network at the office is on a server using DHCP.
THe guys at work suggested that I give the same name to the home workgroup as the office workgroup. Sounds like a neat trick.

The ever-expanding Windows strikes again! It sounds as though XP has incorporated the core functionality of NetSwitcher, but since I haven’t tested Alternate Configuration, and since Microsoft’s record on replacing third party utilities on the first try is not very good, NetSwitcher might still have a market for a while.
