Media player 10 and wdfmgr.exe (Home/SP2)

I installed WMP 10 and one appropriate update to WMP 10 yesterday. Today after running for some 30 minutes I decided to take a look at MS AntiSpyware, and its tools, then a “pop up” occurred:

Application change allowed
Windows Service Windows User Mode Driver Framework (C:WindowsSystem32wdfmgr.exe) to be installed.

At my first glance it was hard to see which real time protection (of three categories) it was, so I went to Autoruns and a quick search found it among the services. Later at the MS AntiSpyware log I find that it was a Windows Services alert.

Yes, the wdfmgr.exe is included in the Media Player 10 setup package, and now I have it running in the background (Funny that MS AntiSpyware didn’t send a notice yesterday. After all, the machine was rebooted after WMP install and funny #2 that the notice was sent first when I clicked on MS AntiSpyware in the tray/notification area. I know ti’s a beta).

So, if do not use any mp3-gizmo-player etc, according to this MS article, it is OK to disable this service? Has anyone any experience of problem etc?

Hello Joe,

Thanks for your reply. I’m not really the person who a) is direct paranoid about every file I don’t immediately recognize, or, try to delete every unnecessary file. And I do know some things about home computers, and read the MS article. But since this service was added, and my Google search gave numerous of sites trying to explain what it is, and I didn’t find anything around here, I thought why not post a question about others experiences.

I’ll leave it for now; still funny that MS AntiSpyware (or WMP) was slow in noticing (or adding) the service.

Another thing, about your links, two of them had the same explanation. It’s remarkable how the exact wording can spread through the Internet, or be re-used if you so like.

Based on the MS article, I’d change the startup type to Manual. That way if it is needed it can be started but won’t start at system boot (unless a device that requires it is attached at boot).
