A tech writer in my office recently installed Word 2003 and can’t get the measurement units in his rulers to change from centimeters to inches even though he has made the setting Tools>Options>General tab>Measurement units:inches. I have the same version of Word 2003 and do not have this problem. Is there some other setting that might be controlling his rulers’ measurement units?

Are you sure the unit is centimeters, not characters? There is a known problem with not being able to turn off characters as ruler unit. See You cannot change ruler measurement unit from character units after upgrade to Office XP (it applies to Word 2003 too).

Thanks, Hans! The Options.UseCharacterUnit=False code solved the problem and gave the tech writer control over his ruler units. We’re satisfied even though neither of us could figure out which dialog box the problematic “Use character units” check box resides in.

There is no check box for ” Use character units” unless you have an Asian version of Word, that’s why you need the line of VBA code.
