MEAN symbol in Word 2000 (WORD2000)

Hi there,
Wld appreciate any help in helping me find this symbol in WORD95 or WORD2000. I need to use this symbol ( an X with a line on top – for the MEAN SYMBOL). I cannot find it in anywhere. I need that symbol for future documents. So how cld I possibly get it to go into the list of Insert symbols.. I have looked at the mathematical category and find it is not there. Please help.

Here’s one way,

Insert this field code: (Use Insert>Field codes or Ctrl-F9)

{ EQ f(,X) }

Kinda hokey, but might work…

Better yet:

{ EQ x to(X) } !!

For easier entry put this in a macro and put a button on it.

Or also easy (for those of us VBA challenged ), assign it as an autotext entry, like “x”, & then press F3.

Hi Phil.. It is not just X .. there is Hyphen like line on top of the text X which is the mean symbol in Stats. So no luck there. thks

I think I was unclear in my post. Kevin gave 2 ways to insert an X with a bar over it using the EQ field. He then suggested assigning it to a macro. I was trying to point out that you could select the entire EQ field (not an x) & make it an autotext entry. You could assign “x” (or anything you want) as a name for the autotext entry.

And, Kevin, yep. I’m not a programmer & don’t know VBA .

Just as an aside, it’s not a good idea to call an autotext entry anything that might turn up in ordinary English text – otherwise you might find it appearing in the most peculiar places! The xMean suggestion is much better – x might turn up in numbering, or ‘x marks the spot’ … or …

That’s probably a good idea, especially if creating autotext entries for end users. I have to say that I use common words all the time on my personal machine. I find I’m not likely to press F3 accidentally, so it hasn’t been a problem.

You mean you have to press F3 to use an autotext entry?! On my machine it just does it as soon as you press space, return, or whatever indicates the end of a word. There must be a checkbox somewhere I haven’t come across …

Hi Kievin,

No luck there. When I insert the code it comes up blank.. when i toggle the code.. so where i am doing wrong.. if u have the mean symbol can u please send me an email tyo meisteru@hhsc.ca . I can copy that over an AUTOTEXT and then use it.. I think that might be the only safe way.
So if any of you have the MEAN SYMBOL please send it to me..

The way I type field codes is to type the code without the braces, select what I’ve typed, press Ctrl-F9 to insert the braces, and then F9 to update the field and show the result. Kevin’s solution worked for me. It is attached.
I suspect that what Phil meant was to name the AutoText entry “X.” I’ve named mine xMean.

You can put the attached template in your Word startup folder and it will give you access to that AutoText entry in all of your documents (once you’ve restarted Word).

Hi Chuck, Thks a million for the zip file. I managed to successfully open it and now it is an autotext in my WORD2000. THks to all of you who have been responding to my query. I tried the insert code thing, but what happens is the line appears like a superscipt and looked odd. Chuck’s method is the only one that really worked for me.. can u explain why one would remove the symbol from the latest version when one uses it heavily esp. in the field of research and esp for one who writes a lot of Stats papers. I am thnakful to all of you once again. Great site. Thks to WOPR for all of this.

You should practice inserting field codes (you’ll use them a lot in automating Word), and Charles’ technique is very good.

Where is the to and bo (is there something for lef t and right) documented? Not conveniently under the field options that I see in WD2000.

It’s there. Do a Find in the help on eq and pick the topic “Field codes: Eq (Equation) field.

I’m jumping in a little late, but I do a lot of statistical and mathematical writing so I’ve got to do lots of special symbols, double sub scripts, etc.

I used to use field codes all the time. For occasionally making an x bar or y bar they’re okay, but they don’t always work.

Now I almost always use Mathtype (the expanded version of Equation Editor). It’s a wonderful program. I couldn’t do without it.

(I don’t work for them or have any financial interest. I just like their product, plus they’ve always been very helpful whenever I couldn’t figure something out.
