• McAfee blocking Macrium download

    Hey Y’all,

Just a heads up. I was trying to load Macrium Reflect Free on my friends new Lenovo IdeaPad S210 today and the download kept aborting. I finally found a version that didn’t include the automatic download of the Win PE environment and that loaded. However, when I went in and tried to create the Win PE rescue media the download again failed. I’m now a little balder trying to figure it out. Finally, I thought maybe it is the McAfee Security Center that came with the machine. My friend had asked me to get rid of this so I ran through the uninstall, verified that Windows Defender was active, and lo and behold Macrium had no problem downloading the Win PE environment software and creating the rescue media.

    I guess you’ll never get viruses if you can’t download software… 😆

    HTH

Same sun here today , never got above 0 degrees F. Guess ya had to be there eh? I don’t remember it being this cold this early in my life. 1983 was colder but that didn’t start until it was closer to Christmas.

God only knows how many problems are caused by security software. I think it’s a lot.

It only got to 83 here yesterday, he he! Supposed to start cooling off a little into the mid 70’s later in the week. Gosh I miss the snow and cold. . . . NOT!

When I bought a PC for my granddaughter a couple of years ago, in addition to all the Dell proprietary garbage, they had installed McAfee 15 month subscription. I’ll give you one guess what was the first garbage I removed. Good-bye McAfee. Then of course I used PC Decrapifier to remove most of the Dell garbage.

I use Macrium on 2 machines myself. Had the same issue on the Dell that shipped with a 1 year McAfee IS suite, though I didn’t know that was causing the issue. When trying to create WinPE rescue media to clone it to a SSD, the needed files (about 300MB worth) would crash as the 62-63% mark. This happened 3 times inside of 15 minutes. However Macrium itself downloaded & installed fine.

So I had to download the MS ADK for Windows 8, which was an initially small file, but when opened, downloaded & installed over 1GB of files (have these on Windows 7, but it’s on DVD when needed). Once this was done, Macrium only needed a 6MB file, which it quickly fetched & I was then able to create an ISO, made both a CD & Flash rescue media using a 1GB unused SDHC card, attached to a USB card reader.

I then was able to boot from that SDHC card, first I created an image of the 1TB HDD, verified the image. Then cloned all but the Recovery partition to a SSD. This was back in October, I believe 2 versions of Macrium has been released since, but being this is meeting my needs for now, don’t see the need to update & have to create media right now. Mabye after a year I’ll do so, once McAfee is removed.

The other computer I since installed Macrium on, with Bitdefender IS 2014, the needed files for WinPE downloaded fine.

The reason why I chose Macrium Free for this machine, though I normally use EaseUS Todo Workstation, was the GPT cloning support. A member on another forum recommended it to me, as EaseUS (the version that I have) will see & backup/restore some of those critical GPT partitions of FAT32 sector by sector, which I’ve read doesn’t work. So I asked on the forum for a solution & Macrium was recommended.

Years ago, before going with EaseUS, I used Macrium for a long time. Until I got the Workstation version of EaseUS on the Giveaway of the Day site. Then someone gave me a copy of ATI 2010, still in use on that PC. It had failed me only once & that was due to HDD corruption, not the fault of Macrium. Switched for premium versions only, no WinPE ISO was offered back then with Free version.

RetiredGeek, thanks for posting this thread, had no idea it had to do with McAfee.

In all fairness, I have never had McAfee on any of my computers. Under Win 7 and Win 8.0, the download would often quit at 63% completion. Macrium Free doesn’t have the ability to resume a download once it is interrupted by a server timeout. This download cannot come from Macrium’s own servers due to Microsoft licensing issues with MS ADK (formerly known under different names, and the source for WinPE 3 or Win PE4 files). The issue is with Microsoft’s own servers, which under my slow DSL connection, time out or kick me off before the download completes. It is frustrating to have to restart from the beginning, but this is my only option, as donwloading 1.7GB is impractical at my bandwidth and speed limits.

      What hat?
Have noticed there are no longer photos or logos on postings, possibly dating from the use of new Dell computer. Is there something blocking them? Windows 8
