I have a Maxtor 6Y080P0 I use for movie files. I use Pinnacle Studio 8. If I download a file longer than about 12 minutes, the drive starts stuttering or something for up to a minute. The file continues to download, but with the stuttering, the finished product is useless.

This is a brand new drive, NTFS, no other files except the movie output files are on it. I think I read that Maxtor drives might do some kind of self-calibration. Any ideas on how to avoid the stuttering?

(i’m thinking about just making ten minute pieces, with a fade out/fade in but I’d rather not, if I can avoid it.)

This is a brand new drive, I got as a warranty replacement! The SMART in the BIOS says it’s OK. All other tests I run say so. I believe there’s something to do with gigabyte sized files being accessed.

I called Maxtor, they couldn’t come up with anything.

        Errol,

You might want to check under Device Manager | Disk Dirve | your new drive name | properties, to see if disk write caching is enabled for that HD. (some can others cannot)

You also should check the size of your page file. You might try to increase it’s size to see if that makes a difference. hmmn
