On all my windows 10 computers, the C:\Users\Computer_Name\AppData\Local\Temp folder gets filled with a bunch of 0 KB files named for example “mat-debug-2384.log”. I’ve searched the internet from one end to the other and have not found the solution to what is creating all these files and how do I stop them. Please, there has to be an expert here that can answer this.

Mine started appearing after installing KB4549951 on May 5 on W10 1909.
There is 1 file for each day except for 2 files in May 7 which had ChrEdge update.

Interesting, I found “aria-debux-xxxxx.log” files at mine TEMP folder. All dated this morning.
And I am the owner, not SYSTEM.

Aria…log seems to be connected with Telemtry, but no one at Microsoft knows what Aria and Mat debug files are :

The xxxxx is the PID number creating the .log file.

Here I found, that is due to incorrect OneDrive setup. So my thought is, that mat-debug is releated to other application/service that is running into issues.

@tom-gorman my bet is on OneDrive, or some sort of MS Office mutation.

Is there any non-zero size file? Mine contains some info..

Looking at the time of mat-debug creation I looked at event-viewer log and found Event-ID 0 for ChrEdge updates.

Bingo! yes man, this is related to Chrome/Edge updates issues!

delete or rename this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate

and it’s done!

Use disk cleanup to rid them. ie
cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535

be sure Cleanmgr is allowed folder access via the ‘Protected Folders” in ‘Widows Security” under ‘RansomeWare Protecton’

I should also note that I don’t allow Onedrive to get access to my folders via Windows Security Options. I never use Onedrive for anything. The only reason that I don’t Uninstall Onedrive is because MS will cause problems in future updates if I do.

MS are as incompetent as they are greedy. With Win 10 it feels like my own PC does not belong to me anymore, strange because I don’t remember MS buying it for me.

It is caused by MS with their retarded updates and zero quality control. This bug has been going on for years. MS don’t care and don’t respond to people asking about it. MS solution, take the money and ignore the customer after.

Took me a long time to find an answer to this problem.
The problem is a MS update that messes up Onedrive & MS Office along with other MS apps.

In the link below you only need to read the posts by Richspacenuke. Ignore Ghost363, you don’t need to un/install anything and, unknown 3rd party software is risky for this kind of procedure. Win 10 has the tools you need. I suggest reading all 7 pages, it is short.

If you don’t know, and to help other readers find what they need :
You can open Command Prompt via Win Key + r then type cmd (there are several ways to open the Command Prompt including the Control Panel and the Start Menu/Windows System folder). Then you type msconfig for the Boot Options as described further below.

To get to the 2 Temp Directories, press and hold the Win Key and the r key (should open Run) then type temp (or) Win Key + r then type %temp% to get to the other temp directory (for aria debug 0kb files). Quite ironic that the files are called “debug files”.

You can get to Disc Clean Up via the Start Menu (Windows Admin Folder) or, you can Right Click the Mouse over the C Drive, click on Properties, it should open on the General tab, you will see a button for Disc Clean Up on that tab (next to the circle representing hard disc space). That will take you to the Check Box Options page.

“The FIX that has worked so far is this: I ran msconfig, checked boot option box as “Safe Mode”, and checked “minimum”, then restarted the computer into Safe Mode and ran Disk Clean Up, then looked in temp file (found no files in my Temp folder, having cleaned them out before I restarted) and confirmed there were no files. Then I unchecked Boot from Safe Mode and Rebooted back into normal windows 10. Viola! no more mat-debug files! This beats uninstalling and reinstalling stuff!”

(he did not mention that %temp% is also creating aria debug 0kb files. You can get to this directory via Win + r then type %temp%)

He then mentions the Check Boxes that he selected in the Disk Clean up options :

“The only reason I can see the FIX works (still holding true after 5-6 shutdowns and startups of my laptop) is that I ran Disk Clean in Safe Mode and the Safe Mode configuration released files from active use that were deleted by that action, uniquely. All I know, is that it worked. If you want I can give you the boxes that I checked in using MS Disk Cleaner. Of course I also uninstalled One Drive and assured that Smartbyte Telemetry was disabled thoroughly before I ran in Safe Mode.”

Check Boxes to select :
“Yes. First delete the existing files in my temp folder and run Cleanmgr once before going to Safe Mode. Make sure that it is checked to clean out all temporary files, temporary internet files, thumbnails, recycle bin files, and delivery optimization files.
Also, I would delete browsing history including using Internet Options and cookies under Control Panel. ”

You may also have old MS Windows Update Files in the GB size range that are safe to remove.
I hope this fixes your MS buggy update issues, it can easily happen again in the future so take notes here for future reference.

I remember when computers did not have all this nonsense, they have trashed it. Now they just want your money for nothing.

I solved the annoying problem with mat-debug-xxxx.log files for me using the commands:

 

Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online | Where-Object {$_.PackageName -Like “Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub”} | ForEach-Object { Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName $_.PackageName}

 

Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub | Remove-AppxPackage

In my case the files in tmp folder were created by the program:
C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub_18.2005.1191.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalBridge.exe
Found by Sysinternals’ Procmon.”

I just noticed I have these today. Did not on 1909, but do on 20H2.

I ran the powershell command to see what apps were installed. No officehub, no onedrive. Nothing obvious.

What can I do to find the source of the issue? For example, not sure how procmon could help me find this.

I’d keep an eye on the files as they may clean up on their own.
They are 0 bytes so take up almost no space.
Let us know in a week what the files are doing.

Checking in late here….

I have this issue. Started with ChromeEdge installed and no doubt for ME it is the Edge Updates causing this. Not Office Localbridge, nor Telemetry, nor OneDrive, nor XBox, etc.

What is the fix? I hate that Edge tries to update that often anyway. As someone suggested removing the folder seems ridiculously risky and not the solution.

What are ya all thinking?

It seems to be machine specific – I don’t have those files – so it’s up to you how you handle it. If you are short on disk space you can try deleting them, otherwise monitor but ignore.

Edge must check for updates daily IMO. Not having an up to date browser means potentially being more vulnerable.

There are three Edge Update Tasks. One checks daily, then every hour after that. This seems to be the one creating those files. I may stop the hourly.

And have to disagree on browsers. Been online since 1986, though likely first browser 93. When there are updates, they let me know. I never install updates to Firefox or Waterfox, etc until I learn what the changes are and they seem stable. With good AV, never a problem. So this constant checking and silent update bothers me. But then again, that bothers me on Win 10 as well. I like stability and knowing what to expect.

So, will see if anyone else comments and likely modify that one task. And no, nowhere near short of disk space. Just lack of tolerance for runaway processes

Curious it is machine specific. Another thing that bothers me. But….

Would someone or ones do me a favor and check the Edge tasks in Task Scheduler? IK seem to have two of the same for MicorsoftEdgeUpdateTaskMachineCore that differ only by an id string at the end of one of them. I suspect that could be an error since they run the identical action at different times of the day.

They have stopped. The Tasks still run but no longer create these files in Temp. Odd, eh?

There are posts peppered on the ‘net that go to safe mode startup, delete all of them, reboot and it fixes it. Makes no sense, but all I did was delete all at once and no more created. Will see if that sticks.
