A colleague has managed to generate this error after trying to print a range underneath a Pivot Table.

nothing we try to do with Page Setup will clear the error, even though we can see nothing wrong!!

Has anyone come across this before / know a solution?

(A quick general search on the internet found a site pointing to an old KB article Q87987 of this title, but the article seems no longer to exist!!)

    Thanks

    Jeremy

The left/right or the top/bottom margins overlap, leaving a negative printable area.

Goto File, Page Setup, select the Margins Tab,

enter a small number into all margin fields.

We are getting this same error now in our Excel 2000/Win 2000 shop. It seems to occur whenever (and only when) someone tries to use the “Fit to x pages wide by y pages tall” option in Page Setup. Default margin values are always used.

Has anyone else experienced this? I would be grateful for any suggestions of how to get rid of the error and still control the size of the print area. Thanks in advance.

Our experience mirrors yours, but not with _all_ like boxes. Also running XL2K/Win2K. “Fit to…” seems to be the culprit for us also – a sheet that may be only slightly larger than one page will blow out to 8000+ pages and the same error message re margins results. We’ve tried reinstalling print drivers, Excel but have drawn the line at the OS. Interestingly, the same sheets that are problematic on the “troublesome” machines will preview/print fine on others on the same network segment, same print server/printer. Go figure…

I’d forgotten I posted here or I would have followed-up sooner, but we found a solution that worked for us a couple weeks ago. See MS KB article Q266114. It took some hunting to find it because I’m not fluent in Microsoftese (who woulda thunk to search on “scaling”? shrug)

Have you/did you switch between PostScript and PCL drivers? We had done so. The net of it for us was to find and delete ALL drivers of both types on the print server that related to the problem printer. In our case it was complicated by the fact that the server box had both W2K Pro and W2K Server installed on it (don’t ask why). Once we deleted the drivers from both the WINNT and WINSERVR directories and reinstalled the printer, we were again able to “print to fit”.

I realize it’s not a 100% match to the situation you described, but the KB article didn’t quite match our symptoms, either. When you grasp at straws, though, sometimes you can grasp one you can hang on to.

          Good luck!
