    Windows 10 (2004) x64

The last 2 months I have not been able to install the Cumulative Updates, they get stuck on installation.

Last month they were stuck on 60%, this month 20%. It seemed odd that it said “Downloading 10%” within 2 seconds then went to the install phase then. I can only assume that they were already downloaded. (Confirmed via Event Viewer)

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F081F: 2021-03 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB5000802). Event ID 20.

Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800F081F: 2021-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 2004 for x64-based Systems (KB5001330). Event ID 20.

Here’s some troubleshooting tips – 0x800f081f: How to troubleshoot the Windows update error – IONOS

As a LAST resort, I’ve seen reports that it took an in-place upgrade to fix this. There are instructions at Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Tutorials (tenforums.com).

NOTE: Be sure to have a backup of anything that is important to you before beginning troubleshooting or an in-place repair. An image backup would be best.

      Thanks for the reply Joe

I tried a windows tool to reset last week, but to no avail. I have since been away due to family commitments, and will try again tomorrow. I will let you know the outcome.

Try the Reset option in Settings> Update and Security>Reset (pick option to keep all your files, whch shows up after you start the utility.)  That’s worked for me before.  If it won’t run, you may have to pick the Refresh option, a real pain.

I don’t see a ‘Thank’ link on my mobile, so I would like to just say thanks a million for all your support.

In the end I have opted to do an inplace repair, which I am pleased to say, it’s solved the update issue.

I always was worried about using repair, but that was on Windows 7. It seems to work fine with Windows 10 2004.

      Cheers
