Malwarebytes is free, but they offer a paid version with more features. Is it worth the cost? Does anyone have experience with the Premium version? Thanks.

AskWoody_MVPMay 27, 2015 at 12:33 pm #1506539Bob,
I use the Premium version on all (4) of my machines, and several relatives machines. I use it in conjunction with Windows Defender, and of course a Brain and I’ve never had a problem with malware/viruses. The premium version will run always active vs on-demand for the free version, and I has no problem with Windows Defender or MSE also running active. I know many will say you can’t run 2 active at the same time but I’ve been doing it for years! YMMV. HTH

@RolandJS: Consider checking the daily results at the above link for several consecutive weeks and then you may wish to re-value your information.
@satrow: If you are already running MBAM2 Premium, please consider unticking all hpHosts categories in HostsMan and ticking MVPS Hosts only or instead. The MVPS Hosts content will differ some (a good thing) instead of the near 100% overlap versus MBAM2 Premium just using hpHosts.HTH

AskWoody LoungerMay 27, 2015 at 5:37 pm #1506620For many professional malware removers, MBAM2 is the gold standard of anti-malware tools. Yet without upgrading to the Premium version many users are missing out on the formidable strengths of the Malicious Website Protection Module (through the auspices of hpHosts), on-access scanning through the Malware Protection Module, and scheduled incremental database updates and on-demand scans. Add to these, one-on-one private assistance with system issues through the corporate help desk.

AskWoody PlusMay 27, 2015 at 6:30 pm #1506627nantucketbob, I have both pay-fors: MBAM & Emsisoft AM. I did some online research, and EmsisoftAM’s shields slightly edged out MBAB’s shields [shields = real time protection]. One major reviewer said MBAM detection & removal was very good!, however the real time protections could use a little more work. Perhaps, presently, MBAM has made progress since that particular review.

AskWoody MVPMay 27, 2015 at 6:45 pm #1506629I use MBAM Prem alongside hpHosts.
The hpHosts team have been super responsive in making modifications whenever I’ve queried anything, whether it’s a false positive on a blocked site, an unblocked ‘retired’ site that’s sprung back into use, or adding a new one – it mattered not whether the contact was via PM, email or the forum, great support.
I update hpHosts daily, via HostsMan and MBAM updates even more frequently, there are times when the hosts file kicks in, others where MBAM steps up, depending on the latest update.
Add the scheduled scans and on-access scanning and malware is something I really don’t need to fret over, as an active moderator, I do get to check out some very dodgy regions of the ‘net, to try to ensure that others aren’t affected by malicious posts/links.

AskWoody LoungerMay 28, 2015 at 6:39 am #1506683I’m a retired, non-tech, person (with no connection to MBAM.) I run the premium version on my W7 SP1 desktop. I have found MBAM’s support extremely helpful and responsive at all times. That’s important to someone like me. Also, running alongside the free version of BitDefender I haven’t been hit with any viruses or malware.

AskWoody PlusMay 28, 2015 at 8:50 am #15067161PW – I will watch that site every now & then. However I’m concerned they’re doing a little mixing of apples and oranges. Antivirus results and AntiSpyMal-ware should have their own separate tests and tables, imo anyhow. And, using only 1 study without knowing what all, how all, they throw at their collection of security software – won’t do it.

I could not agree more with the distinction between those products. However to remain competitive, vendors have ventured into the previous territories of others. I have on-going respect for the EAM product and if no MBAM existed, I would be running it now. The EEK product is a wonderful second opinion scan IMHO.
The acid test, for my comparison purposes, is 1), submitting a known malware file to VirusTotal. And 2), lurking the sub-forums of trained malware removal professionals and gauge for yourself which utilities, and in what order, those folks run. Those results should not surprise anyone.
Cheers.

AskWoody LoungerJune 4, 2015 at 9:45 am #1507916I am a “computer tech”. I have used the free version to help hundreds of neighbors and clients, more computers than I can count. I have a standing decision to purchase products that I constantly use. Since I surf the web in “NeverNeverland” the Pro version has saved my “a**” many times. I find it the best value product I have ever paid for. Avoid the imitators!
