Malware Bytes not working with Windows XP:

For a long time, I’ve used Malware Bytes to clean up customer’s PC’s and in real time to keep my own PC safe from all sorts of Malware.

But very recently, I found that Malware Bytes no longer works on any of my Windows XP PC’s.
It works just fine on Win-7 or Win-8 though.

So, doing some experimenting, I restored a Ghost Backup of my C: drive, made in November, 2011.
After the restore I ran Malware Bytes and it updated and scanned with no problems.

Then I noticed a message on the screen telling me that there is a new version of the program available and did I want to download it. I clicked that message and was taken to the download page at Malware Bytes. I downloaded the new version of the program and installed it. On opening the program after the install, I got a message telling me the program had encountered a problem and would close.

I’ve gotten the same message on every one of my XP PC’s after downloading and installing the new version. So my only conclusion is that Malware Bytes is no longer supporting Windows XP.

I’m wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem. ???

There is some mention of problems in the MB forums with XP specifically and version 1.6.
The solution seems to be to download and run mbam-clean.exe, reboot and then install the latest version.

      I saw your posting here so I decided to dig out my old XP based Lenovo X61 laptop;

I’m currently using (free) version 1.45 on my XP based laptop, which I hadn’t updated in ages (months) But it didn’t offer to download the latest version, just the defs.
So I manually downloaded the latest version (1.60) as of this writing, uninstalled the older version, and the proceeded to install the latest version.

Other than offering a choice to start the trial version of the paid program, which I declined, I was able to update the defs and perform a successful scan.
So no issue on my end when it comes to installing and running the latest version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on my XP based system.

I ran a scan with the 1.45 version and found nothing, then when I downloaded and installed the latest version it found the following:
      PUM.Hijack.StartMenu

      Hi Doc,
Now running XP Pro SP-3 …with Malwarebytes PRO 1.6.0.1800…”No-problemo”…If the ” MB Cleaner” doesn’t work for you …Might have to do with some .NET update:cheers: Regards Fred

PS: Just after this response Malwarebytes PRO successfully blocked this intrusion attempt…Way Cool

I’m running it with xp pro SR3 fine. 1.60.0.1800

Yup, that’s the version that just errors out on my XP machines, , , all of them.

So there’s definitely something different between computers. It’s not just the OS version or SP level.

Maybe in time, MB will find a fix for it. Maybe!

Cheers Mates and thanks for your input.

      The Doctor 😎
