Well, it had to happen sooner or later. Nick Bolton has gone commercial. I got an email from him a short time ago, announcing Mailwasher Pro. He’s offering his previous “contributors” a free copy and I filled out the form to get mine. Check it out here.

As I said in another thread about the free product, 28 beta iterations and still no SSL as promised. The new Pro version apparently doesn’t have the feature either. The following email from Nick overnight:

Secure Socket Layer.

It allows encrypted e-mail transfer. It’s the same ecnryption stuff that makes secure web servers possible.

SSL E-mail seems, to me, to be more common in Europe than in North America.

And I never would’ve stumbled on it here in the USA if I hadn’t setup a mail account for my son to check his email when he’s visiting at my house. He uses InsightBB.Com for his web provider and they require SSL and a non-standard port when checking mail “remotely,” at least here in this service area.

Don’t take it wrong, because I like Mailwasher a lot and will continue to use it, but I wish people wouldn’t do this. I clipped off the top part of this screenshot showing the “common” features in both the free and commercial version. See any tendancy toward “fluff” in that column? The Pro version, except for a couple of pane changes in the GUI, seems to be where the beta work on the free version went. He has taken the free version back to Version 2 on its web site. I guess maybe not enough people contributed so he had to make the transition. Remains to be seen how the Pro will “sell” at $30 bucks a pop…..

Well, since I had ‘donated’ to Nick the 2nd day I had downloaded and used MailWasher last year…I don’t have to pay for the Pro. Now, if I didn’t like the Pro at all, then I would revert to using the regular free MailWasher…still worth the ‘donation’.

This is good to know Al, coz I was sad when I did not get an email to allowing my free upgrade as an existing user. Only had it 3 months, now, after reading your post, I don’t feel disappointed! I really do like the version I have, and agree with what you say. i’ve seen this happen with other programs released as freeware, after it becomes popular and marketed, most of the features in the “pro” versions (which are not cheap) are often stuff I do not need. I will not name the products, but there are 2 little programs I am still using from way back in 1999. I wish the creator well, but I do think $30US is a bit rich, I would have paid $15 or $20.
