Does anyone know how to turn back on the Outlook Express mail received icon in the systray that has stopped displaying when mail is received?

    Thank you.

      BTW–

When that icon decides to come out and display, OE has to be running. It is not impacted by udpates for OE or IE –I have OESP1 and IE SP1, and thought that brought it, but Frank Saunders straightened that out since it had been showing in versions 3-4 years previously whatever was the year of OE 4–and one of the differences between it’s erratic behavior and the free download Tom Koch recommends on his site I linked you to is that with the OE notifyers (there are many for Outlook as well) OE doesn’t have to be opened for them to notify in the notification area aka sys tray.

You know John’s diagnosis sounds like a great one; I have to check but this may be related to the XP and IE virus and the Longhorn virus I hear could hit in the future. I put this to one of the gentlemen who has an MS OE MVP site on the msn OE newsgroup, and the answer Frank Saunders came back to me with was that it had been default since an OE 4 edition. The question from Cherie was how to get visual mail notification that made no noise. But exactly as you all say–I use it nearly every day for the newsreader mainly, and I get mail there. I don’t open a lot of it that’s advertising for the ISP, and on one day the icon will be there, and the next day it won’t. It was there last week, and it has the week off this week–could be OE virus or maybe it’s moonlighting somewhere, but I may have a solution.

“Sometimes you might not want to leave OE running, but would still like notification of new mail. And it’s sometimes nice to be able to see mail message headers before you actually download the messages themselves. Then there are those times when someone sends you a 9Mb file that you don’t want to download. For those and similar occasions, I use Magic Mail Monitor. This very small program (only 71K to download in zip format) sits in the system tray and checks for mail from any number of POP3 accounts on any schedule you configure. You can view just headers, or delete headers from the server, or double-click a message to download it and read it as either a text file (*.txt) or an OE message file (*.eml). You can also create multiple profiles with different accounts and settings. And best of all, it is 100% free.”

Mine used to work all the time … then it stopped completely … now it works very occasionally. I think it is the Microsoft OE6 virus… sad

Later I’m talking rubbish, the behaviour described by me above relates to Outlook at work, not OE … blush stupidme
