Mail merge 5 & 9 digit Postal codes (2002 – XP)

I am trying to do a mail merge using an Excel file as the data source. One of the fields is a Postal code which contains both 5 digit (#####) and 9 digit (#####-####) codes. Problem is, when I merge the data, the 9 digit Postal codes appear as

Hi Don:
The method in the article should work. Can you copy the field codes that you’re using so we can actually see them? By the way, did you update the codes (F9)?

Okay, I was wrong… it DOES work. I was creating a field code (Ctrl F-9) then copying and pasting everything in between the braces. I didn’t realize they were nested field codes. Anyway, when I typed it in, it worked fine.

Interestingly, I also found that the original data source and merge document also works fine provided the first record is in the #####-#### (9 Digit) format. It is as if Word established the field picture based on the first record.
