macroes migration (Word 2000)

Yesterday I was migrated from a Gateway Windows98/Word2000/Outlook to a Del Windows2000/MSOffice2000/Word2000/Outlook2000. When I looked for “Normal.dot” on the Del, there was none THEN we are informed that the corresponding “normal” doc on the Win2000 is Normal.FMT. Is there a way of migrating my dozens of carefully crafted macroes from the Normal.dot (which I retained on floppy as a Word 2000 txt file) to the Normal.FMT file?

AFAIK, a .FMT file is a paper description file, not a Word template. The Normal template is named Normal.dot in any version of Word. In a brandnew installation, Word uses the factory settings, so no Normal.dot doesn’t exist yet. Once you change some of the options in Word, a new Normal.dot will be created; you can also copy your old Normal.dot to the new machine if you can still get at the old machine.

For what it’s worth, the next time you want to save your macros, you can save the template containing those macros. Then you can copy the modules using the Organizer. You can also export the macros from the
VBE as a .bas file. You can later import the .bas file to your new template. However, you need to be careful that you don’t replace an existing module in your new template.

If worse comes to worse, you can create new normal.dot & then create a new module using the VBE (Alt+F11). If your macros were saved by copying everything from your old normal.dot modules, you can paste your text file in a module in the new normal.dot. All your macros should then be there.

I think you’ll like Windows 2000. I’ve only managed to crash it twice in a year. Compare that with Windows 98, where you have to save everything before you print – every time! But I digress.

As noted by other posters, you can create a new Normal.dot fairly easily. I’m not sure about your reference to a .txt file. When you are moving code modules, or if you are looking for a way to back them up, you can use the File|Export… option to create a .bas file. When you export a form, it creates two files (.frm and .frx) to contain the form object and its code. Hope you got everything, and enjoy!
