Have used Macrium Reflect Home versions 7 and 8 for backups of my Windows 10 Pro system.  After updating Win 10 past version 2004, my Rescue Media builds still show as “Windows RE 10 version 2004 (64-Bit)”.  Does this mean my Windows 10 RE version is not properly updating?  Or is Rescue Media Builder not properly rebuilding/updating my USB flash drive?  Or have the Windows 10 updates past version 2004 not needed any Macrium Rescue Media rebuilds past v. 2004?

I’ve been using Group Policy edits to keep my system on Windows 10 Pro release 21H2.  I’m holding off on the upgrade to Windows  11 for now.

The version of Win RE or PE that Macrium uses for the Rescue Media can differ from the version of Windows installed on your PC. That’s really not an issue, since Win RE/PE is just used to boot into the rescue environment, and so it’s up to Macrium to decide which stable version they support for Rescue. It’s not always the same version as the current release of Windows.

I just built a rescue for the latest version of Macrium v8.0.6867, and mine is also Windows 10 RE version 2004.

You could contact the Macrium forum, or their support, with any specific concerns.

Here is a related inquiry from last year on the Macrium forum:

Can you boot from the rescue media and see your backups?
If so, all is well and you can relax in the knowledge of a job well done.  🙂

      cheers, Paul

All backup images (on an external USB 3.0 HDD) are accessible when booted with rescue media here with Windows 10 RE version 2004. 🙂

Thanks John & Paul.  That answers my questions!  “RE 10 2004” probably suits Macrium’s boot needs until updating to Win 11.

John–I didn’t find that Macrium forum response when I was searching their site.  Thanks.

Paul–Will have to boot from my latest Macrium v. 8.0.6867 Rescue boot drive to test.  Thanks.

Thanks to all you “Ask Woody” members out there for great info and member support!

Windows RE hasn’t been updated since 2004, this is probably because all builds since then share the same codebase. Take boot.wim from a 21H2 ISO and it’s still build 19041 (2004).
