Curious whether any Macrium Reflect users have used the Rescue Media on systems with a PS2 Standard Keyboard and Mouse and would be willing to share how well that works and whether any issues encountered.

I have experienced sporadic instances where the PS2 keyboard and mouse become unresponsive after booting with Macrium Reflect Rescue Media.

The system in question is a Windows 7 Home 32 bit with PS2 keyboard and mouse (ie old).

The Rescue Media was built to USB flash drive using installed Macrium Reflect Home v8.

My first try at Rescue Media build to USB was to use PE10, but when I tested and hit the unresponsive keyboard and mouse, thought maybe I overreached with PE10.

So my next try was to build Rescue Media using PE3 but I ran into the same issue.

Last try was to build Rescue Media using WinRE which surely must work and did appear so until one time it did not.

Interestingly, it always starts with the mouse working making me think all is well. But then when I try to type using the keyboard, not only does the keyboard not work, but the mouse stops working as well (ie both become non-responsive). But this is sporadic and unpredictable.

All this seems impossible since booting into my Windows 7 Recovery Environment never has problems with keyboard or mouse.

That said, my past few boots using the Rescue Media have not run into any keyboard or mouse issues. But my past tries have me skittish about betting the farm should I really need the Macrium Reflect Rescue Media to work some day.

This sounds like a user problem even to me as it does not seem possible.

Symptoms make me think about things like drivers or device conflicts. But no thought of why booting into Windows 7 Recovery Environment without Macrium never has problems.

So, not expecting a solution – just wondering how others have fared with a PS2 Keyboard and Mouse with Macrium Reflect.

I do not have any problems with Macrium Reflect Rescue Media on any other system – only the old one with the PS2 keyboard and mouse.

Well, there are certainly others on the Macrium forums that have similar problems. Not that many though. What I got out of reading through them was the RE environment seems to work the best. Other than that, matching the PE environment with the OS seems to be more critical. One person, I believe, had to use Win PE 5 or lower for Windows 7.  Doesn’t it just default to whatever it needs?

I have probably read many of the same posts on the Macrium forums and came away with the same impressions. Did not seem to be any hard solutions for those reporting problems other than, as you say, building the Rescue Media with RE offers the best fit for most. You are correct that the Rescue Media build defaults to using RE. I initially had tried PE10 wondering whether it might have broadest compatibility. When that seemed iffy, I fell back to PE3, and finally RE which right now seems to be best.

One thing that I noticed is that there is a Keyboard Layout drop down under the Other Tasks. When I click on Keyboard Layout, it shows as US which is correct for me. When I visit that selection before I ever touch the keyboard, things have been working so far. Personally, I think that is sheer coincidence (kind of like wearing your lucky shirt so your team wins).

I will continue to play with it to see if I can identify any sequence that causes the non-responsive keyboard and mouse to flare up.

I haven’t gone directly to Macrium since the problem is sporadic and unpredictable and knowing the reply from Macrium would be that I must reproduce the problem (which I can not do on demand).

Try building the rescue media on the Win 7 32-bit PC with the PS2 hardware.

You said: “The Rescue Media was built to USB flash drive using installed Macrium Reflect Home v8.” I’m assuming that is on a different PC?

Actually, the Rescue Media was built on the same system (Win7 Home 32 bit with PS2 keyboard and mouse). My initial try to use PE10 was not meant to imply I built the Rescue Media on a Windows 10 system. Sorry I made that confusing – was just trying to be complete with everything I have tried.

Right now my best results seem to come using RE for the Rescue Media build (possibly combined with my discovery of a Keyboard Layout drop down under Other Tasks after booting with Rescue Media – but I think just coincidence that visiting that without any changes has any effect). I need to identify what sequence of events was giving me problems via the hard way of trial and error.

Do you have a USB keyboard and mouse that you can test with on the old Win7 system? Just to confirm that it’s only an issue with PS/2?

That is an excellent suggestion. Since the nature of the problem is sporadic and unpredictable, I need to first continue with some trial and error to see if I can reliably come up with a sequence that frequently results in the problem.

Right now, my Rescue Media build using RE seems to be working – although I have had a failure once even with that. But if I can reproduce the problem, then definitely trying a USB keyboard / mouse would be the next step.

An old version of Acronis is installed on that system and I have been using their Linux based rescue media to make images and do restores with 100% reliability, so getting Macrium to work on that particular system is not an absolute necessity.

My objective has been to get familiar with Macrium Reflect as I consider the purchase of a modern system. Although I am a big fan of the older Acronis versions, I don’t like their newer offerings so wanted to see if Macrium could be my new go to.
