I had been using the latest version of Macrium Reflect Free version 7 something for several years on my Win10 Home HP laptop.  Last week I decided to prowl through a backup (all I do is whole disk, all partitions, to an external USB drive) and discovered that it did not appear to have backed up my Photos folder that hangs right off my C: drive.  I was quite surprised, since the photos are the main reason I am backing the drive up; several other non-standard folders off of C: were missing as well, although the usual ones like Users, Windows, & Program Files were there.  It had been a long time since I browsed through the folders and files in a backup.  Has anyone seen this before?

I have now installed Paragon Backup, and run it successfully.  I checked and all my folders appear to have been backed up.

To backup files and folders in Macrium you need to specify them explicitly. It would appear you missed the Photos folder when you set up the backup.

This is one of the reasons I don’t suggest MR for non-techies.

(all I do is whole disk, all partitions, to an external USB drive)

The OP said they used the whole disk option, not the File and Folder Backup option (not available in the Free Version by the way).  So everything should have been backed up as there is no option to select or de-select individual files or folders.

If true, this is quite concerning for Macrium users.

Ah, I forgot the paid version is different.

Maybe the Photos folder has been redirected to another disk?

          cheers, Paul

No, not redirected to another disk.

I  just checked my latest full image disk backup with Macrium Free and  all folders are there.

Are you checking your image by utilizing the Macrium App then selecting the Restore Tab then the backup image you want to review, then Browse Image, then select the C: Partition, then assign a drive letter, then allow Macrium to mount the C:  Partition image?

Not clear when you say “my Photos folder that hangs right off my C: drive”. The Default Pictures folder in Windows 10 is a sub-folder under  the “Users” folder under C:

If you have not moved your Pictures folder, it should be at C:\Users\Your User Name\Pictures and included in a Macrium “Image this disk” backup.

Why is my post #2367991 above not appearing under the Recent Replies listing?

To piggy-back Tex265’s approach — does V7 Free show in the Backup Tab both — Image Selected Disks — AND — Backup Files –. IF Yes, pls Clarify WHICH you used. Hoping Paid V7 copies Free … MY Paid “Backup Files” is about Chking boxes for inclusion (C:\ & Photos are separate boxes) and Imaging is chking Partitions on the Disk. Your including “all I do is whole disk, all partitions” implies Imaging.

IF you ever want the guaranteed answer I hope you’ll post at the Macrium Forum(s) depending on which Backup approach was used / there isn’t a more helpful App-specific Forum than Macrium …..

Okay I figured it out.  I had mislabeled the file folder and was looking at a backup for a different computer than I thought.  Sorry for the fuss everybody.  I appreciate the efforts to help.

Macrium is a powerful program, but, frankly, it is not user friendly.  Unless the user understands relatively advanced computer principles, it is easy to think you are doing something when you are not.  It took me a long time to understand what the program was or was not doing.  For example, Macrium Free does not include all the backup options (understandable).  However, in Macrium Free, the program will actually start one of the unsupported backups if the user asks for it, work for a while, and then give you an error message saying that such a backup is not supported.
