AskWoody PlusSeptember 17, 2024 at 12:07 am #2704471Release of macOS Sequoia brings 70+ new security fixes
macOS Sequoia has officially launched with new features and improvements such as window tiling, iPhone Mirroring, the new Password app, and more. But under the hood, Apple delivered a staggering amount of patched bugs/vulnerabilities to Mac users. These are the 76 security patches that come with the first public release of macOS 15 Sequoia…
Apple shared details of each on its Security Updates page. The CVEs range from kernel vulnerabilities to addressing access to sensitive data in apps like Siri, Maps, and Shortcuts. These fixes help prevent potential exploits like arbitrary code execution, privilege escalation, and memory leaks. Apple also implemented patches to protect against various attacks by improving memory handling, input validation, and sandbox restrictions.
Here’s the full list of 76 security fixes with macOS Sequoia:..

AskWoody PlusOctober 5, 2024 at 6:09 am #2707890@PKCano plus others. I’m not rushing into Sequoia. Macrumors Forum is full of Sequoia complaints especially on Intel macs like my 2019 iMac. The consensus seems to be Apple is no longer spending much time on Intel macs. Meanwhile, this Ask Woody Forum does not seem to have many Sequoia update experiences like there is for iOS 18. I’ll probably update to iOS 18 for my iPhone 13 when there is enough of an all clear on this Forum. As to Sequoia, I’m starting to think why take the risk for features I don’t need nor want when Sonoma is working fine. Just wait for Sonoma security updates when available. But I would like to see more OS 15 update experiences for Intel macs on this Forum to confirm my decision.

AskWoody PlusOctober 5, 2024 at 1:55 pm #2707952Apple seems to be releasing macOS versions that are more and more problematical.
I don’t use a Mac (wish I could). I used in the past Apple IIe, IIGS, IIc, Lisa.. Currently iPhone, iPad Pro, Apple watch. Never since my first iPhone 4s, iPad Mini 1, Apple watch 4 have I Encountered any problems.
For me all these years, It Just Works.
* I am running beta versions on all my Apple devices.

AskWoody PlusOctober 5, 2024 at 2:55 pm #2707960I have no experience with iWatch, iPhone, or iPad, so I don’t pay much attention to their operating systems.
I do have 7 years experience with both an iMAC and MacBook Air and it seems to me from what I read that the later versions of macOS have had an increasing number of issues when first released. On both computers I’ve always been a year behind the latest OS version so I haven’t experienced any initial release issues, but I’ve had a handful of issues from security updates.

AskWoody PlusOctober 6, 2024 at 8:12 am #2708095@DrBonzo How old is your iMac that you are updating? Mine is a 2019. I am increasingly nervous about updating to a new OS now as Apple is, I think, not spending that much time on the older Intel Macs. I may just stay on Sonoma as it is working fine and I know its layout and feature set.

AskWoody PlusOctober 6, 2024 at 12:50 pm #2708118It’s a 2017 and has one year of support left as I understand it. It’s running Monterey – that just reached the end of support when Sequoia came out – at the moment, and I’m about to update it to Ventura, which has one year left. The 2017 iMAC doesn’t qualify for any version past Ventura (which would be Sonoma and Sequoia)
OTOH I may just blow off macOS all together and install Linux Mint on it. Mint does 95% of what I need to do on a computer (and as a bonus does it flawlessly with no update drama – it truly does Just Work), and the other 5% I need Windows for anyway.

ManagerOctober 6, 2024 at 1:04 pm #2708119Ventura has been working flawlessly on my 2017 iMac since about a week after it came out.
Don’t know what you are doing, but I’ve never had an update or upgrade cause trouble on any of my Intel iMacs, MacMinis, MacBook Pros, or my Apple Silicon MacMini and MacBook Pro.
That’s not to say I always jump in the day after a version upgrade is released, but I will shortly move to Sequoia on the latter two machines. Had to be sure my Parallels, Paragon NTFS for Mac, etc were compatible first. -

AskWoody PlusOctober 6, 2024 at 2:17 pm #2708147I never jump in early with updates/patches either; I treat macOS patches as I do MS patches. I don’t run any third party programs other than Firefox on the macs, and while I’d be the last person to consider myself as a techie, I’m not exactly Joe User, either. I’ve had two grey screens of death on the iMAC and two instances where Software Update totally failed. On a MacBook Air I’ve had a couple of updates result in very slow boot times.
To be clear all of these issues have come from security updates for a macOS version that was already running fine on the computer, and not for version upgrades.
I think this just falls into the category that different people have different experiences with any operating system. I have a friend who has a Dell refurbished computer running Windows 10. It was purchased with mine at the same time in the same purchase order. The computers and the software on them are as identical as identical can be. I always install updates first and when I have no issues I tell him I think everything should be fine. I watched him install an update where all heck broke loose and it took me the better part of a day to get the machine running. Why did that happen? Who knows!?
So I think that one person having trouble with an update doesn’t mean someone else will have trouble, and that one person not having trouble with an update doesn’t mean that everyone will have no trouble.
It’s not my intent to be argumentative or defensive, it’s just the way I see the situation and it’s just my experience with macOS. And for the record, I’m not a big fan of Windows/Microsoft. The monthly MS soap opera gets mighty tiresome.
