LWP -> Word Converter

Can anyone recommend any 3rd-party Lotus WordPro to Word document converters? I couldn’t find any provided by Microsoft.

We do some critical business with IBM, so being able to read the Lotus WordPro format without having the sender remember to save it to RTF or some other format would be REALLY nice!

Funny, until I looked I thought that was one of the standard converters, under “Open” and select “File type”, but no it’s not there.

However, as an aside, we request that ALL documents be sent as RTF as part of the company anti-virus procedure. (Rich Text Format excludes macros but not text formatting

Asking people in your organisation to send as RTF is fine, but in a non-work setting it’s not so easy. I too have been trying to open a LWP dociment someone sent me, downloaded all the file converters MS had to offer, all to no avail. SO if anyone out there knows how this can be done. I’d like to know.

I keep thinking an LWP converter is there also, and I keep being disappointed when it’s wrong.

Re: all incoming documents being some format – We can ask all we want, but when a large customer / ally (not quite the right term, but it gets the idea across) wants to send in their default format, there’s not a lot we can do about it.

I’m starting to find more companies are setting either their firewalls or their anti-virus software to block potentially harmful extension such as exe, com, doc and xls.

Then the users have a built in excuse. But you’re correct it is less easy for small operators or individuals to take the same stand.

One comment on using RTF on all emailed documents. When I was working at a school district they sent out an RFP with a lot of graphs, graphics etc. and when saved as RTF the file ballooned to 40 MB. In Word format it was around 800 KB.

That is a real and now Sophos has issued this warning RTF vulnerability.

Perhaps this is too simplistic, but I save the .lwp as the highest Word file available in WordPro’s save options. Open the file in Word, in a template that controls the style attributes. Then I save it as the Word version I’m using (2K). Tables are coming in fine; the only place I have a problem is with graphics. If the original files aren’t available, I use a full-function screen capture program (Full Shot) and get them from the original file to paste/insert them into the .doc.

That sounds fine if you are using lwp, but it doesn’t help if you are the Word user to whom someone sends a lwp file you can’t open!
