    Hi

I have a brand new (5 weeks old) machine Pentium 4 512mb DDR with XP home installed by the vendor. I last installed a Critical XP update on Friday (I think) last week. Everything was fine this morning then on trying to turn the machine on this afternoon I received the following error message:

lsass.exe System error: When trying to update a password this retun indicates that the value provided is invalid

The machine then returned to the boot up screen showed this message again and just keeps performing this loop. My vendors advice was to use the recovery discs but of course this would mean losing the last three weeks of my data in addition to having to reinstall all of my programs and obviously I am loath to do this – I know I should have a backup but with the machine being so new I hadn’t got round to it.

The Knowledge Base acknowledges the problem and mentions the OOBE as the cause of the problem and says that all I can do is to restore to new and lose all my data.

Can anybody give any further possible advice or assistance (or even explain how or what has happened) or am I going to have to start again and lose three weeks work?

    Please

Sue, Do this happen when you try to login? If so, boot into safe mode, login as the administrator & reset the user password. If that does not work boot into safe mode again and uninstall the update. If none of that is successful, can you boot into the recovery console? I kind of doubt it with a vendor’s recovery disk. Do you know anyone who has a full XPH CD that you could use to boot into the recovery console? You could repair the installation and see if that helps. If none of that is available, can you have someone do a search for password recovery/reset tools available. Many of those are very expensive but there are some free and less expensive ones available. I’ve not had occasion to need one (thank goodness) so I can’t comment about any particular product.

        Thanks Joe

I was unable to get into Safe Mode and even tried the new (to me) Last Known Good Configuration option which would have been super if only it worked. Being the sole user of a standalone machine I find this whole obsession with passwords crazy.

I think I can get hold of an XPH disc and will try Recovery Console. Unfortunately I don’t think I can justify the time or expense of password recovery programs. I am just grateful that I had kept my old box with W95 so at least I can keep up with my mail and seek help from the lounge.

        Many thanks

Sue, You’re welcome. Have you tried searching the MS newsgroups? You could post a message there also.

          Good luck,
          Joe
