Hello everyone. I have a problem with my computer and it has been in and out of a repair shop for various things and costing me a fortune for stupid little things that I should be able to fix myself but I am completely computer illiterate. I am hoping you can all teach me a thing or two.
I took my machine to repair shop because my mouse was not working and had apparently needed drivers or some such thing which you get from loading Windows 98 CD. However, this repair shop on the previous visit loaded Windows 98 SE onto my machine which I don’t have, I only have Windows 98, so in effect I have to take it to him get him to load SE and pay him $70.
Anyway, my problem is when I got it back this time, I opened excel to look at a few workbooks which were password protected and there was no problem, but I decided to delete them. For the life of me I can’t remember how I did delete them though as I may have done it incorrectly because the next day when I tried to open them excel word would not open. It gave no message it just did nothing. I searched around the net for 2 days to see if I could find something to help me but nothing.
I then decided to uninstall and reinstall Office 2000 and have done so many times since and these are the 6 messages I receive after installing and restarting.

I repeatedly got these same 6 messages, except for this morning when I did another uninstall and reinstall, the last message did not appear, but all of the others did.

I know this may seem like a bit much, but can anyone help me solve this? Remember I am completely ignorant when it comes to computers and will need very very basic step by step instructions, but I can follow instructions to the letter.
Any help much appreciated.

Hopefully the information on this page will solve your immediate installation problem: “Error 1911. Could not register type library for” error message when you run the Office 2000 Setup program

I would also be pressing the computer shop for a CD copy of the 98SE O/S they have loaded. If they’re charging for the service, then the onus of licensing issues etc. is on them for whatever they’re installing, and you’re entitled to a copy for your own future use.

See how you go and post back if there are further problems.

Hi Alan
Thank you for taking the time to help me. I have gone to the link that you gave me and I tried the resolution for cause 2 but same thing happened with the errors. Now I am going to try the resolution for cause 1 but as I am totally incomprehenso with the computer, the first step says ‘rename the following files: C:Program ………’ etc etc. OK dumb question I know, but how do I rename the files ? and the files they mention aren’t EXACTLY the same as the ones coming up on my screen.
What do you think I should do?
Also, I have thought about getting A CD from repairer or getting him to change my OS back to 98 but as I will definitely be getting a new computer in next few months, and the fact that I have heard that repairer is going out of business due to tax avoidance issues I really can’t be bothered with the hassle. I don’t think he would care too much about my problem as he has plenty of his own, if he is still there that is.

To rename a file, start Windows Explorer and navigate through the folders until you find the named files. Then right-click one and choose Rename. Just change the extension by adding XX at the very end so that you can recognize the changed files later. Windows usually will warn you that this might make the file unusable. Since that’s our goal here, continue with the renaming process. Does that work?

Now, about the differences in the file names listed in the article vs. the ones in your error messages, don’t worry about that. The explanation is not worth having. In short, the Microsoft solution is not about fixing the problem directly, but about hiding those OLB files to trick the setup program into making it right.

The Microsoft article said, if I remember correctly, that there was a problem with the data components. You can download and install an updated set of data components from Microsoft. While they are not the same version as the ones that shipped with Office 2000, they still should work, and perhaps the installer for those components is “smarter” than the Office 2000 installer.

The MS page is here: Download details: Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 (It is compatible with “Windows 98,” which I hope means first or second edition.)

Hello again
I downloaded the MDAC program, I am assuming that all I had to do was save it to my desktop, then open it when it finished download. It then told me to restart my computer which I did, I then tried to open Microsoft Outlook, then Excel, then Word, but no luck.
Any more suggestions welcome.

Before recommending something more drastic, can you confirm: you cannot start Excel or Word using their program icons, or you can start them but have to suffer through annoying errors before they load completely, or the annoying errors are limited to specific documents?

In the worst case scenario, you might need to uninstall and reinstall Office 2000 again. If you haven’t used Microsoft’s “eraser” tool to clean up the remaining traces in between, you might want to try one or both of these:

Utility to completely remove remaining Office CD1 files and registry entries

OFF2000: Utility to Completely Remove Remaining Office CD2 Files

Of course, even the erasers aren’t perfect…

You receive an error message when you run the Office 2000 file and Registry Eraser Utility to remove Office 2000

Before running these, please back up your data files (e.g., My Documents) and if you use Outlook, all PST files that you can find on your system. You might need to “turn on” viewing of and searching in hidden folders. This is done through Windows Explorer. I don’t recall the exact menu/dialog names in Windows 98, but try Tools>Folder Options…, View tab, then scroll down the list and make sure you are viewing hidden files and folders.

Just to confirm your question about what happens with Office.
I install (after uninstalling and checking to following for remnants and deleting them if they are still there:
c:program filesMicrosoft Office deleted Microsoft Office
c:windowsapplication datamicrosoftOffice deleted Office
c:windows 2 files Msoffice.—&Msoffice.ini deleted Msoffice.ini as other file not there

I did this on the suggestion from someone.

After install, I restart computer, and whilst Office is going through the second part of install the 6 errors appear each time.
I click ignore at each message. At the end of it I click on the Ms Outlook desktop icon (as instructed by install program), the Windows installer comes up and gathers info and then I get a message that ‘ the operation failed due to an installation problem. Restart Outlook and try again.If problem persists,please reinstall.
If I go Start/Programs/Excel /or Word the mouse pointer changes to hourglass for about 3 seconds then disappears, and nothing happens.

Generally speaking, there is no reason to manually delete program folders or data files as part of the uninstall/reinstall process. Because some program folders may contain shared components (for example, Outlook uses some Outlook Express components; different Office programs may share program files), it is safest to use the automated installers and erasers. I don’t know whether that is related to the error messages — these systems are so complex and interrelated that we may never know!

Yes I see your point and I was a little reluctant to do this, but as the advice came from someone who appeared to know what they are doing I did it anyway. Also the errors had been occuring for at least a week, we had tried lots of things that didn’t work, so I guess it was a last resort. Also I am getting a message: Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug? Line:394 Error: Invalid argument. Do you have any clue what this means and if I have to act on it. I have clicked on Yes a dozen times and No a dozen times but it keeps coming back.

Is that an error in an Office application or in Internet Explorer? If it is in Office, it usually indicates that some custom code could not handle something about your computing environment. If it is in IE, it usually indicates an error by the author of the web page. In IE, you can adjust the Advanced Options to not display debugging messages. That doesn’t fix the web page, but it does reduce the annoyance to you! There are more posts about this on our Internet Explorer board with illustrations of the dialog.

Thanks again for your help.
The error 394 is occuring in IE as Office is not working at all. All of the icons are there but absolutely nothing happens when I click on. I think this might be something for the repair guy.

Does the IE error only affect your home page? Can you get to other sites and do they work?
