My neighbour asked for advice telling me that the email folders he had created had gone & the default folders were empty. OE6 is still working & we have exchanged messages successfully to prove this. Our messages are in the Inbox & Outbox.

A virus scan (signature files up-to-date as of this morning) reveals nothing amiss.

A search in Windows Explorer for *.dbx files gives a no results return.

In Options | Maintenance | Store Folder I have noted the path to that folder.

In Windows Explorer the path terminates at the Identity folder which is empty.

The path should continue to Microsoft/Outlook Express but it is not being seen. I have checked the setting in Folder Options & there is nothing set to block seeing all the files on the computer.

    There is no backup.

I have always understood OE keeps email in dbx folders how can there apparently be dbx folders on the system when there is nothing to block seeing them? Can you suggest what I should do next? I would be very grateful for any help on this one!

Do you have the “Show hidden files a nd Systems” turned ON?

What account name is being used to log into Windows?

Thank you for your response. Please accept my apologies for my tardy reply.

I have spent some time on that computer since & have been able to establish that the facts as I stated them were not totally correct. I found three archive bombs in the Temporary Internet Files & by deleting all the offline content through Internet Options they have been removed. I also found the DBX folders but only by altering the Search parameters in Windows Explorer . It is a fact that the original DBX folders cannot be located.

Show hidden System Files is turned on & log in is as Administrator.

The remaining concern is that on each On Demand virus scan the number of files reported as scanned rises & falls by approximately 3000 without the computer being used between scans.

I will have access to the computer again on Monday so I hope to be able to find out more then.

Thank you again for your interest. It is very much appreciated.
