Although I have set up dropdown lists in the validation options for some columns on one of my worksheets, lately all the dropdown arrows have disappeared, so I can’t use the lists—what could be causing this?

If the arrows have disappeared, it could be that the validation is deleted. To test if Validation is still on, select the entire spreadsheet and choose EDIT GOTO and click the SPECIAL button. Select validation cells and All and chose OK. This will or should highlight cells with validation. If no cells are highlighted, then there is no validation cells and your arrow validation has been deleted. You will need to set up the rules again!

Thanks for your reply. The validation still works when an item is typed into a cell, it’s just that the dropdown arrows don’t appear (even though the ‘in-cell dropdown’ option is ticked), so items can’t be selected from a list.

Problem solved. It seems to have been caused by some corrupt links, as after I rebuilt the file by copying and pasting all the sheets into a new workbook (and removing the old filename from all links and defined names), the dropdowns are now working again.

Glad to hear it’s fixed – even if my reply was of no help! grin

I had a similar – though intermittent – problem with filters in xl2k when I first moved to it – I seem to recall that a service pack install fixed it but can’t remember which one. (FWIW, I occaisionally get colleagues complaining of this in XP as well). If service packs don’t work, try working through Jan Karel’s starpost on behaviour problems and see whether that helps.

One thing to be aware of with datavalidation:
If you copy a cell that has no datavalidation over a cell with datavalidation, the datavalidation will be “removed”
